Teaching Fellows
Area high school seniors are among the 2009 recipients of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarships.
Each Teaching Fellow receives a $26,000 scholarship loan from the state, payable in $6,500 annual increments. The full loan is forgiven after the fellow has completed four years of teaching in North Carolina public schools or U.S. government schools.
In addition, all fellows take part in unique academic and summer enrichment programs during their college careers.
This year, 2,252 high school seniors competed for the 500 scholarships. Recipients have an average SAT score of 1,186 on the SAT. Among the recipients, 34 percent are males and 25 percent are minorities.
Students from Rowan-Salisbury Schools include Justin Paul Holshouser and Molly Elizabeth Trexler, East Rowan High School; Trevor Ryan Gray, Salisbury High School; Lindsay Alison Frye, South Rowan High School; Samuel Wilson Daniel, Alexandra Blair Grubb, Melani Rose Lippard, Chelsea Sky Sullivan, West Rowan High School.
Mooresville Graded Schools: Jordan Barclay Marsh, Mooresville Senior High.
Cabarrus County Schools: Janel Elyse House, Northwest Cabarrus High School.
Pfeiffer scholarship
Pfeiffer University has awarded Kia Rice, a Salisbury High School senior, a Legacy Scholarship, an academic scholarship valued at $6,000 per year.
Rice recently attended a luncheon at Pfeiffer University where she was officially recognized for her achievement and received ascholarship certificate from the institution’s Vice President of Enrollment, Steve Cumming.
“When Kia comes to Pfeiffer, she is going to be joining a dynamic student body that is truly doing amazing things,” said Cumming. “Knowing that she has worked hard in high school to earn this prestigious scholarship, I’m confident that Kia will utilize Pfeiffer’s unique programs and experiences to reach her fullest potential.”
Rice, a resident of Salisbury and daughter of Stanly and Cynthia Rice, plans to major in criminal justice while at Pfeiffer.
Alpha Chi
Catawba College’s Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi, a national college honor scholarship society, was recently represented at the Alpha Chi national convention held April 2-4 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Omicron Chapter President Kenzie Brogden, a senior from Wilmington, and faculty sponsor Dr. Bethany Sinnott represented the Catawba chapter.
Brogden made a presentation titled “Painting Women: An Investigation of Italian Female Painters from 1500 to 1700.” Sinnott, who has worked with the Catawba chapter since its founding in 1978, received a 30-year service pin. The Omicron Chapter received a Star Chapter Award, an honor achieved by no more than 15 percent of the chapters in the country.
Winner of this year’s Alfred H. Noell National Scholarships were announced during the convention and a Catawba College junior, Cyle Petersen of Campbell River, British Columbia, was among the 10 recipients selected from over 300 Alpha Chi chapters in the country. This is the second year in a row that a Catawba College student has been selected to receive such a scholarship; Catawba senior Justin Lewis of Luttrell, Tenn., was the scholarship recipient in 2008.
