National honor
West Rowan High School’s Marco S. Gupton has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars.
Gupton has an opportunity to apply for scholarships, academic competitions and other benefits.
JROTC competition
After advancing through two phases of competition, the South Rowan High School JROTC Leadership team will participate in The College Options Foundation’s 2009 JROTC Leadership Symposium and Academic Bowl in Washington, D.C., on the campus of George Mason University, June 26-30.
The team competed in two rounds of competitive online play against thousands of JROTC students from across the world to win its place in the championship. During these rounds, students were tested on standard high school curriculum ó math, science, English ó and leadership skills. The team is one of only 48 in the nation to advance to the finals.
The JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl is a nationally recognized academic competition just for JROTC students.
The College Options Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the academic development of high school students and assisting them in their preparation for higher education.

Woodleaf grant
Anita Fessler, a fifth-grade teacher at Woodleaf Elementary School, has received Philip Morris USA Water Conservation Grant from a representatives of N.C. Beautiful.
Steve Vacendak, executive director of N.C. Beautiful, and Robin Nichols, member of N.C. Beautiful Board of Directors and manager of sports venues, presented a $7,705 check to Fessler to start a water quality and conservation project.
All fifth-grade students at Woodleaf will be involved in these multiple learning experiences.

Cooleemee
Cooleemee Elementary third-graders got their first tour of the Mill Village Museum on March 10.
They also got lessons about what life was like before electricity and went upstairs at the Zachary House to learn about cloth production at the mill.
Cooleemee Historical Association President Tony Steele showed students the process of making cloth from cotton. The same students took a “Giant Walking Tour” of Cooleemee on April 2 to complete their heritage geography lesson.
Smith elected to East Carolina office, wins scholarship
Tremayne Bryan Smith, son of Patricia Watkins, has been elected executive treasurer of the Student Government Association of East Carolina University.
As treasurer, Smith is the CFO of the Student Government Association and will oversee appropriations and the budget.
Smith also has been awarded the White Star Scholarship by Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He is pledging this new fraternity on the campus of East Carolina and will be a founding father.
Smith attended West Rowan High School and is majoring in music education and political science.
