MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan senior Abigail Wilson scored 31 points  on Tuesday and broke the program’s career scoring record for girls basketball.

Wilson, who signed with UNC Asheville, is the first female to score 2,000 for the Falcons. She has 2,001.

The previous record belonged to Ayana Avery, who scored 1,995, before going on to star at Radford.

Wilson is averaging more than 27 points per game.

West (16-2, 4-1) won 71-54 against Statesville to stay tied for first in the North Piedmont Conference with Carson and East Rowan. West plays at East Rowan on Friday.

West led the Greyhounds  38-18 at halftime.

Taylor Poole made four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 18 points. Cindy Connolly had 13.

East girls roll

OLIN — East Rowan’s girls kept pace with West Rowan and Carson in the North Piedmont Conference with a 61-39 win at North Iredell on Tuesday.

East (15-3, 4-1) is tied for first with the Cougars and Falcons and has a big home game against West on Friday. East won at West.

“North Iredell played hard and we didn’t play our best,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “It’s still a big road win — and now it’s back to work.”

Adalie Harrison scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter with two 3-pointers and four free throws. Haley Dalton also scored 14 for the Mustangs. Leah Hinceman had 11.

“We had a tough start, struggled to get any shots to go in and did a poor job of defending their screens,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “Leah (Hinceman) did a good job of giving us a spark in the second quarter and giving us some breathing room.”

Emily Myers scored 10 for the Raiders (3-16, 0-5).

NR girls win

SPENCER — North Rowan’s girls had a season-best offensive showing in an 80-30 romp against North Stanly on Tuesday in Yadkin Valley Conference action.

Hannah Wilkerson had 22 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks for the second-place Cavaliers (14-6, 10-2). Natavia Taborn had 16 points, five steals and four assists. Kamora Cannie had 14 points, seven assists and six steals. Makiya McDaniel had 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Kimya Lynch had five points and 10 rebounds.

Also scoring for the Cavaliers were Alaysia King (5) and Chloee Stoner (4).

North Stanly fell to 6-8 and 6-4 in the YVC.

Carson girls win

TROUTMAN — Carson’s girls led 20-5 after a quarter at South Iredell and  went on win 62-40 in North Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.

“We got off to a great start with pressure defense,” Carson coach Brooke Stouder said. “We’re a much better team when we can make it a fullcourt game. That’s who we are right now.”

Carson played without Hannah Isley (ankle) and Colbie Perry got in foul trouble, but Carson (16-3, 4-1) still won with relative ease to stay tied for first first in the NPC.

Ellie Wilhelm led the Cougars with 14 points and six rebounds. Maci Cooper scored 11. Colbie Perry scored nine points.

Carleigh Pery had 12 rebounds, and Victoria Post and Lani Isley had seven each.

Ashtyn Zeigler scored 10 for the Vikings.

“They’re not tall, but they’ve got girls who can shoot if you give them space,” Stouder said. “In a lot of ways, they’re like us.”

SHS girls pound CD

LEXINGTON — Salisbury’s girls stayed undefeated in the Central Carolina Conference on Tuesday with a 68-33 romp at Central Davidson.

Salisbury led 41-11 at halftime.

The Hornets (17-1, 13-0)  got a season-high 20 points from Anayia Fulson.

Kyla Bryant scored 13, and Rachel McCullough had 11.

South girls fall

LANDIS — South Rowan lost 42-30 to Oak Grove in Central Carolina Conference play on Tuesday.

Bethany Rymer led the Raiders (4-15, 3-10) with 12 points. Mackenzie Chabala scored nine, and Madilyn Cherry had eight.

South led 26-25 after three, but Oak Grove had a big fourth quarter.

Zaire Jones scored 12 for the Grizzlies (11-8, 6-7).

Ja’el Miller had a huge game for the Vikings with 32 points.

Emily Hege had 39 points and eight rebounds to lead North Davidson (15-4, 11-2)  to a 64-48 win against West Davidson in Central Carolina Conference action on Tuesday.

Haley Lowe scored 24 for the Green Dragons.

CPC girls

Reagan took a 53-30 win against Davie County on Tuesday in Central Piedmont Conference girls action.

Alyse Binyard scored 23 for Reagan.

Somer Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson scored nine each for Davie.

JV girls

West Rowan’s jayvee girls won 36-30 against Statesville on Tuesday.

Jenna Wheeler led the Falcons with 13 points. Brooke Kennerly had 11.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played Captains Choice on Sunday.

First place went to Calvin Smith and Ralph & Pam Carver.  Ralph Carver chipped in from 65 yards out for an eagle on No. 7.

The team of Susan Wydner and David and Azalee Huneycutt finished second.

Ralph Carver had the longest putt. Smith had closest to the pin.

SPENCER — North Rowan’s boys bounced back on Tuesday and beat North Stanly 64-55 in Yadkin Valley Conference action.

Brandon Jefferson had a big game  for the Cavaliers (12-6, 10-2) with 15 points and nine rebounds. He made three 3-pointers.

Brandon White had 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Kendrell Goodes scored 15.

Dyson Bell led the Comets with 16 points, while Koby Poole had 12.

LANDIS — South Rowan’s boys took a 47-37 win against Oak Grove in Tuesday’s Central Carolina Conference play.

“We won it with defense,” South coach Andre McCain said.

It was 13-all at halftime. South scored 19 in the third quarter to get the edge.

The Raiders (3-16, 3-10) swept the Grizzlies this season.

Braden Graham scored 12 points, including seven free throws in the fourth quarter. Barrett Thompson scored 10. Brenden Fingerscored all seven of his points to spark South’s big third quarter.

Sakari Poole (6-12, 3-10) led the Grizzlies.

The Greyhounds’ victory tightened up the North Piedmont Conference race. West (10-7, 4-1) is still in first place.

Jalen Moss scored  a season-high 28 for the Falcons, including 16 in the fourth quarter.

Chaz McCombs and Jay Joseph scored 14 each, and Macari Allison had 10.

Statesville (12-5, 3-2) got 23 points from Chris Brown, 19 from Jasiah Gathings and 18 from Elijah Holland.

The Greyhounds led 20-10 after the first quarter and maintained control.

LEXINGTON — Central Davidson’s Jacob Myers made eight 3-pointers and scored 30 points in a 65-52 win against Salisbury on Tuesday in Central Carolina Conference action.

Zay Kesler scored 16 for the Hornets (11-7, 8-5). Cameron Stout scored 11.

Carson boys lose

TROUTMAN — Carson’s boys had a chance to move back into a tie for first place in the North Piedmont Conference on Tuesday but were upset at South Iredell, 52-51.

South Iredell made the deciding shot with 1.6 seconds left.

Carson took a one-point lead twice in the last minute — on EJ Clark’s free throws with 40 seconds left and on Javon Smith’s layup with six seconds left.

Smith led the Cougars (10-9, 3-2) with 24 points.

“Tough one,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “We didn’t shoot it well, but we had our chances. We just needed one more stop.”

Cullen Smith scored 13 for the Vikings (5-13, 2-3).

Women’s basketball

Tyzarea Alexander (Salisbury) had 10 points and nine rebounds for Methodist in a 58-47 win against Salem on Tuesday.

Shenique Pharr (East Rowan) scored four points for Salem.

Catawba tennis

The Catawba women’s tennis team was picked ninth in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll.

Senior Sophie Hirsch was named to the preseason All-SAC team first team in singles.
