Salisbury Police Department will apply for grant money to purchase equipment

The Salisbury Police Department, in cooperation with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, wants to apply for a portion of $211,654 available through 2009 Justice Assistance Grant Recovery funds.
The Police Department proposes to use $160,754 of what the two agencies are eligible for to buy computer-based technology and equipment upgrades, including a computer-aided vehicle-tracking program and a pawn shop ticket database management program.
It also would buy spare portable radios and replacement handguns, holsters and accessories for officers assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit.
The Sheriff’s Office will apply for $50,900.
It proposes the purchase of 50 Taser guns and 200 Taser cartridges for patrol officers. The office also wants to buy two portable defibrillators, one of which would be placed in the Rowan County Detention Center.
Salisbury City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday on the Police Department’s application request.
Council meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 217 S. Main St.
In other agenda items Tuesday, council will:
– Request state loan assistance through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 for the Town Creek interceptor sewer extension project along Interstate 85.
– Consider appointments to the Transportation Advisory Board.
– Consider closing the 300 block of East Council Street from midnight April 30 to midnight May 1 for a scheduled Salisbury Barbecue Festival.
– Consider approval of a final subdivision plat for Hidden Creek in which the city will accept the subdivision’s streets and establish stop conditions.
– Consider approval of a Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) control program.
– Hold a public hearing and consider a one-year extension to the site plan for property in the 1100 block of East Innes Street.
– Hear presentations from community groups making budget requests for 2009-2010.
– Hear a 2009-2010 budget request from the Salisbury-Rowan Economic Development Commission.
– Recognize Salisbury Police Sgt. Jerry Green’s retirement and authorize issuing his badge and sidearm.
– Recognize the Salisbury High School girls basketball team for winning the N.C. 2A championship.
– Proclaim April Child Abuse Prevention Month.
