NEWBERRY, S.C. — Malik Constantine had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead Catawba’s men’s basketball team to an 89-86 overtime win at Newberry on Wednesday in South Atlantic Conference play.

Catawba (13-6, 8-5) had lost in two overtimes to the Wolves in Salisbury.

Zaqwuan Matthews made five 3-pointers and scored 17 for the Indians. Devin Cooper scored 16. Marcell Haskett scored 10.  Daquan Lilly had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Catawba won on the boards, made 11 3-pointers and had 13 turnovers.

Catawba survived some sensational outside shooting by Newberry. The Wolves shot 16-for-30 from the 3-point line. North Stanly product Luke Gibson made six 3-pointers for Newberry (11-8, 7-6).

Matthews made a 3-pointer with 1:31 left in OT for an 85-84 Catawba lead.

Lilly’s layup with 18 seconds left — Haskett made the pass — put the Indians ahead, 87-86.

Newberry had two shots     from close range late but missed both. Constantine grabbed the defensive rebound with three seconds left and then made two free throws for the final margin.

The Indians are alone in third place in the SAC.

Catawba women fall

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Catawba’s women’s basketball team suffered a cold shooting night and lost 69-56 at Newberry on Wednesday.

Catawba (16-2, 11-2) had won six in a row and is  ranked 18th in Division II.

Catawba fell into a tie for first place in the South Atlantic Conference with Anderson and is just one game ahead of Tusculum and Carson-Newman.

Janiya Downs (South Rowan) led Catawba with 11 points in 16 minutes. Shemya Stanback (A.L. Brown) scored eight.

Catawba made 23 turnovers, shot only 28 percent from the field and was   only  2-for-16 on 3-pointers.

The Indians stayed in the game with 26-for-33 foul shooting.

Australians Kelsey McDermott (18 points), Keli Romas (17) and Courtney Virgo (13) led Newberry (10-8 7-6).

Newberry had 18 turnovers.

Livingstone football

Livingstone College athletics will announce its new head football coach on Thursday at 2 p.m., during a press conference on campus.

An announcement from the school did not name the new coach, but stated that he is a former NFL player.

Livingstone did not retain former coach Daryl Williams, following last season. The Blue Bears won their first four games in 2019, but then lost six straight to end the season.

   

SHS girls pound CD

LEXINGTON — Salisbury’s girls stayed undefeated in the Central Carolina Conference on Tuesday with a 68-33 romp at Central Davidson.

Salisbury led 41-11 at halftime.

The Hornets (17-1, 13-0)  got a season-high 20 points from Anayia Fulson.

Kyla Bryant scored 13, and Rachel McCullough had 11.

North boys win

SPENCER — North Rowan’s boys bounced back on Tuesday and beat North Stanly 64-55 in Yadkin Valley Conference action.

Brandon Jefferson had a big game  for the Cavaliers (12-6, 10-2) with 15 points and nine rebounds. He made three 3-pointers.

Brandon White had 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Kendrell Goodes scored 15.

Dyson Bell led the Comets with 16 points, while Koby Poole had 12.

Salisbury boys fall

LEXINGTON — Central Davidson’s Jacob Myers made eight 3-pointers and scored 30 points in a 65-52 win against Salisbury on Tuesday in Central Carolina Conference action.

Zay Kesler scored 16 for the Hornets (11-7, 8-5). Cameron Stout scored 11.

Carson boys lose

TROUTMAN — Carson’s boys had a chance to move back into a tie for first place in the North Piedmont Conference on Tuesday but were upset at South Iredell, 52-51.

South Iredell made the deciding shot with 1.6 seconds left.

Carson took a one-point lead twice in the final minute — on EJ Clark’s free throws with 40 seconds left and on Javon Smith’s layup with six seconds left.

Smith led the Cougars (10-9, 3-2) with 24 points.

“Tough one,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “We didn’t shoot it well, but we had our chances. We just needed one more stop.”

Cullen Smith scored 13 for the Vikings (5-13, 2-3).

East boys lose

East Rowan’s boys lost at North Iredell on Tuesday, 72-65, in a North Piedmont Conference game.

East (2-17, 0-5) led by 11 early and by nine as late as the third quarter, but couldn’t hold on.

Jackson Hawkins, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, made four 3-pointers and scored 32 for North Iredell.

“We were hot as a match early, but we went flat in the fourth quarter,” East coach Trey Ledbetter said. “But it was a great atmosphere, a well-played, competitive game.”

Cameron Padgett led East with 15 points. Gavin Sprinkle and David Jordan scored 11 each. Dylan Valley made three 3-pointers.

The Catawba women’s tennis team was picked ninth in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll.

Senior Sophie Hirsch was named to the preseason All-SAC team first team in singles.

Catawba senior Ryen Reid is second team in singles on the All-SAC preseason team.

West Rowan girls basketball guard Taylor Poole signed with Guilford on Wednesday.

Poole is averaging 10 points and 4 assists per game for the Falcons.

Salisbury sophomore linebacker Jalon Walker has received an offer from Virginia Tech. He’s also been offered by Kentucky,  Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest.
