SALISBURY — Livingstone’s men took only seven 3-point shots on Thursday but they took the ball to the rim and beat Elizabeth City State, 85-78, in a CIAA basketball game played at New Trent Gym.

Livingstone (12-10, 6-6) shot 59.2 percent and had a 40-27 rebounding edge.

Roger Ray made only one 3-pointer but scored 29 points on 9-for-15 field-goal shooting and 10-for-10 accuracy from the foul line.

Lydell Elmore scored 24 points, shooting 7-for-10 on field goals and 9-for-11 on free throws. Navar Elmore added 12 points.

Livingstone trailed by 12 midway through the second half but was able to mount a comeback. A flurry of dunks by Navar Elmore ignited the rally.

Shykeef Daniels scored 22 points for the Vikings (11-10, 4-7).

LC women win

SALISBURY — Livingstone’s women’s basketball team won 56-51 against Elizabeth City State on Thursday night at New Trent Gym.

Daisa Harris had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the CIAA contest.  Adel Allen scored 12, and Daijah Turner had 10 for the Blue Bears (10-10, 6-6).

Devona Stell led the Vikings (8-13, 4-7) with 18 points, while Sirenna Pitts scored 16.

Livingstone came back from a slow start and turned things around with an 18-7 advantage in the second quarter.

HS volleyball

West Rowan senior Tori Hester has been named to the Prepvolleyball.com All-America team.

High school hoops

The biggest game tonight is the West Rowan at East Rowan girls contest.

The teams are part of a three-way tie for first place in the North Piedmont Conference, along with Carson.

In the first round of NPC play, East beat West, West beat Carson, and Carson beat East. The teams are ranked seventh, eighth and ninth in 3A.

Carson plays at North Iredell tonight.

• West Rowan’s boys lead the NPC by one game over Statesville, Carson and North Iredell going into tonight’s game at East.

• Salisbury’s girls are still unbeaten in the Central Carolina Conference and are home tonight against Oak Grove.

• South Rowan’s teams are at home tonight against West Davidson, while North Rowan’s teams are at North Moore.

• In the South Piedmont Conference, A.L. Brown’s boys moved into a tie for first place with Tuesday’s big win against Cox Mill. The Wonders are at Concord tonight and will be looking to avenge an upset loss in Kannapolis.

• In the Central Piedmont Conference, Davie’s boys are in a three-way tie for second place, one game behind R.J. Reynolds and play at RJR tonight.

Signings, commits

North Rowan linebacker Jordan Goodine will sign with Catawba football next Friday. Goodine also plans to play baseball for the Indians.

West Rowan defensive lineman Levontae Jacobs has received an offer from Norfolk State.

NCHSAA

Two proposed amendments to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association bylaws have been voted on by the membership  schools and failed to get the necessary 75 percent of the votes.

The first proposal would have allowed the NCHSAA to change the number of classifications  and would have resulted in either five or six classifications for the upcoming realignment, scheduled to begin in August of 2021.

Schools also turned down a second proposal, which would have allowed the NCHSAA to realign on an annual basis. Realignment will still be done every four years.

  

HS football

Former Catawba College assistant Shane Handy who coached Randleman to an undefeated 2019 regular season has been hired as Clayton High’s new coach.

Middle school girls

Meredith Faw scored 10 points in Corriher-Lipe’s 21-19 overtime win against West Rowan.

Ari Alston made the game-winning shot.

McKenzie Menius scored 11 for Corriher-Lipe in a 30-29 loss to Mooresville.

Erwin’s girls won 30-4 against Southeast.

  Savannah Wise scored eight points, Sadie  Featherstone had six, and Lily Kluttz scored five to lead the Eagles.

Pfeiffer basketball

Pfeiffer’s men put six in double figures and blew out Greensboro 113-79 on Wednesday.

Pfeiffer’s women lost at home to William Peace on Wednesday, 62-56.

A’Mya McClain scored 20 for the Falcons.

Women’s basketball

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had five points, seven rebounds and three steals in UNC Pembroke’s 62-44 win against Francis Marion on Wednesday.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy varsity boys basketball team pulled away in the  fourth quarter and defeated Hickory’s Tabernacle Christian School, 64-50.

The Jaguars scored 41 in the second half. Hank Webb led the scoring with 25 points, and Jacob Mills contributed 20.

The Jaguars play at Davidson Day on Monday at 5 p.m.

  Hurley YMCA

The J.F. Hurley is taking registrations for spring soccer, flag football and girls volleyball.

Register through March 1. Cost is $45 for members and $75 for potential members. All programs are for boys and girls.

Ages for soccer are 3-14. Ages for flag football are 5-13. Ages for volleyball are 10-14.
