WINSTON-SALEM (AP) ó Dell Inc. has made a new round of job cuts at its desktop computer assembly plant in North Carolina, trimming 50 contract jobs, a newspaper reported Friday.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Dell made the cuts at its plant in Forsyth County. A company spokeswoman would not confirm the number, but said the cuts were part of a global work force reduction needed to stay competitive.
The Journal said Dell cut 150 full-time jobs at the plant last month and had cut 115 contract positions in November.
Dell opened the $115 million plant in 2005.
Company officials said the plant had about 1,150 employees in September. Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines said plant officials said there were 1,400 workers before the March cuts.
Under agreements from the state, city and county governments, Dell is eligible for up to $305 million worth of incentive payments depending on the size of its work force and its capital investment.
Winston-Salem and Forsyth County have so far paid Dell $22.2 million in incentives.
The incentives called for the company to have 1,700 employees by October 2010 and said the company will have to repay a percentage of the property tax breaks it received if it doesn’t have enough employees by the deadline.
