Letter: Leave Enochville alone in school consolidation talks

There has been so much confusion over school consolidation with the reality being that it should not happen. Talks of this matter has scared so many families out of our school district!
Enochville Elementary is a great school that is very much needed in the community. A simple solution for low numbers would be redistrict. Give Enochville back students that were taken from them when Millbridge was built. This would ease numbers at Millbridge and raise the numbers back up at Enochville. The kids that were taken from Enochville live closer to Enochville to begin with.
It is ridiculous to disrupt so many schools, students, families and staff in all the shuffling that would take place if the closing of Enochville or other schools would occur. Parents do not want the children pulled out of their neighborhood schools they are so accustomed to, and bused halfway across the county. This puts a hardship on families. Lots of children do not handle change well, especially special needs children. Children get the love and one-on-one attention they need to learn in their community schools.
There has been money approved for schools that are much older. It continues to be said that Enochville was built in the 1930s, when the truth is only one building was constructed in the 1930s.
That building is in good constructional condition and made of granite stone, which will be standing long after many new buildings. Other buildings on the campus are much newer, dating all the way to the late 1990s. That’s not to mention a brand new chiller and boiler system, carpets and more.
Lots of projects being done and considered are from monies that our students, families and parent teacher association have raised. Enochville is not in need of great repairs to continue in operation. It is a very well maintained school that should be left in our community.
We need to keep our community schools open and keep our district strong as it has always been in the past!
