West Rowan senior basketball player Abigail Wilson was honored as the NCHSAA’s female athlete of the week.

Wilson surpassed 2,000 career points and became the program’s all-time leading scorer last week.

Wilson scored 31 points in a win against Statesville and had 33 in an epic overtime win against East Rowan.

Wilson scored 34 in Tuesday’s West loss at South Iredell.

She signed with UNC Asheville.

Catawba men

WINGATE — Catawba’s men’s basketball team outscored Wingate 95-91 for a  South Atlantic Conference road win on Wednesday.

Catawba shot 55.9 percent from the floor and was 12-for-24 from 3-point range.

Marcell Haskett made five 3-pointers and scored 26 for the Indians, while Devin Cooper had three 3-pointers and 24 points.

Malik Constantine and Daquan Lilly scored 13 apiece. Ben Zemonek had 10 rebounds.

Catawba had 23 assists, with Haskett accounting for seven.

Jarren Cottingham led the Bulldogs with 21 points.

Catawba led by 14 points with 14 minutes left and was able to hold on.

Catawba women

WINGATE — Catawba’s women’s basketball team ended a two-game slide on Wednesday night with a 59-48 South Atlantic Conference win at Wingate.

Catawba (17-3, 12-3) shot 30.9 percent but made eight 3-pointers and forced 21 turnovers.

Taisha DeShazo made three 3-pointers and scored 18 points. Lyrik Thorne scored 14 and had five assists and five steals. Shemya Stanback had 11 rebounds.

Catawba led by 15 at halftime and by as many as 21 in the third quarter.

Bryanna Troutman (Salisbury) had 19 points and nine rebounds for  the Bulldogs. Teilyah Jeter had a triple-double with 10 points, 10 blocks and 11 rebounds.

SALISBURY —  Jalen Spicer made a layup before the buzzer and lifted Fayetteville State’s men’s basketball team to a 74-73 CIAA win at Livingstone on Wednesday.

Livingstone (12-12, 5-8) trailed by 20 at halftime, but made a furious rally in the second half and took a 73-72 lead on two free throws by Roger Ray.

Jalen Seegars scored 25 for the Broncos and made five 3-pointers.

Ray went 11-for-11 at the foul line and scored 26.

Malik Smith scored 17 for the Blue Bears.

ROBBINS — North Rowan’s girls romped 74-30 at North Moore on Wednesday.

Hannah Wilkerson scored 23 to lead the Cavaliers (15-7, 11-3), and Kamora Cannie had 21. Makiya McDaniel added 10.

WINSTON-SALEM — Davie’s boys lost to R.J. Reynolds 77-61 in Central Piedmont Conference action on Wednesday.

Zaharee Maddox scored 24 points to lead the War Eagles (12-8, 3-4).

North boys (Wed.)

ROBBINS — North Rowan’s boys won easily, 73-33,  on Wednesday after making a long  Yadkin Valley Conference road trip to North Moore.

Zay Davis, Kendrell Goodes, Brandon Jefferson and Amir Watkins scored 10 each for the Cavaliers (14-6, 12-2).

All the Cavaliers scored.

North is at Gray Stone on Friday and hosts Moravian Prep and N.C. State-bound Josh Hall on Saturday.

BEAR CREEK — North Rowan’s boys won at Chatham Central 51-37 in a Yadkin Valley Conference basketball game on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers avenged a 54-30 loss to Chatham Central in Spencer and moved into a three-way tie for first with Chatham Central and South Stanly.

Brandon White scored 14 for North. Brandon Jefferson made three 3-pointers and scored 12. Zay Davis had 10.

Michael Moore and  Lucas Skertich led the Bears with 10 apiece.

North  (13-6, 11-2) trailed early but took charge with a big second quarter.

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s boys won against Ledford 54-53 in tight Central Carolina Conference action on Tuesday.

Zay Kesler scored 15 for the Hornets (13-7, 10-5). Nate Brown had 12 and Latavian White added 11.

Tyler Partee scored 16 to lead Ledford (11-9, 8-7). JJ Barker scored 14.

Partee’s father, Jonathan, was a standout quarterback for the Hornets.

Both teams were hit with technical fouls in the final minutes. White made decisive free throws for the Hornets.

THOMASVILLE — Tyree Barnes scored 22 points and Malcolm Knight had 17 to lead Thomasville (13-7, 9-6)  to a 75-50 Central Carolina Conference win against South Rowan on Tuesday.

Braden Graham scored 21 for the Raiders (4-17, 4-11), while Barrett Thompson had 14.

South trailed by 15 at halftime.

Thomasville topped 100 points against South in the first meeting.

A.L. Brown’s boys (15-5, 5-2) put five in double figures and beat Northwest Cabarrus 78-65 in South Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.

Amari Grier led the Wonders with 17. Kheni Briggs had 16, Mi’Keim Moore and JD Glenn scored 12 each, and DQ Foggie had 11.

The Wonders stayed one game behind Cox Mill in the SPC standings.

A.L. Brown girls

A.L. Brown’s girls (7-13, 3-4) lost to Northwest Cabarrus 45-37 on Tuesday.

Jaliah Smouthereson and Jaliyah Simmons scored 10 each for the Wonders, and Jal Campbell added seven.

JV girls

Sydney Hlavacek scored 14 points in Salisbury’s 51-38 win against Ledford on Tuesday.

Catawba softball

Catawba’s Madison Hunter was named the South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week.  .

Hunter,  helped lead the Catawba Indians to a perfect 4-0 record.

  She accounted for three of the wins in relief appearances where she totaled seven innings, allowing no runs on just one hit, with three walks and 14 strikeouts.

Local golf

GARS members filled 14 teams and played a Captains Choice at Corbin Hills.

The first-place team with a minus-11 was the team of Steve Masingo, John Goodman, Ted Weant and Frank Masingo.

Second place with a minus-10 was the team of Jesse King, Tommy Lambert, Mark Yehl, Larry Luther and John Daniels.

Third place with a minus-9 was the team of Gary Schenk, Ken Miller, Scott Hay and Bob Turner.

Fourth place with a minus-8 was the team of Winston Mahaffey, Bill Reid, Tom Seamon and Lynn Shook.

Closest to the pin on the  No. 2 hole was Yehl.

Longest putt on No. 9  was made by David Schenk.

The par-5 No. 18 hole was eagled by Schenk, Miller, Hay, Turner, the team of King, Lambert, Yehl, Luther and Daniels, and the team of Phil Cauble, Larry Perrell, Chuck Jones, Donnie Burris and John Cress.

The par-5 No. 6 hole was eagled by the team of Gene Cauble, Larry Petrea, Carrol Downey and Tom Dodge;  the team of  David Scearce, Allen Hammill, Ron Bowers and Bill Saunders, and  the team of  Tony Labarbera, Phil Rollins, Tommy Ellis and Bernard Caldwell.

The 18th annual Bob Hundley Golf Tournament will be  held at The Revival  Golf Course (Crescent) in Salisbury.

The date is Sunday, May 3, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the North Rowan Athletic Booster Club.

The $50 cost per player includes lunch. The format is Captains Choice.

There are a number of contests and prizes.

West Rowan lost to West Henderson in the first round of the 3A dual team state playoffs.

Davie beat Ardrey Kell in the first round but fell to Mooresville in the second round of the 4A playoffs.

HS swimming

Salisbury and South Rowan swimmers will compete in the 1A/2A state meet today in Cary.
