The Humane Society of Davie County held its 13th annual Cause for Paws dinner and auction March 10 at Hillsdale United Methodist Church in Advance.
Rachel Dunn, adoption center coordinator, presented the first ever Volunteer of the Year award to Joel Honeycutt (an employee of the Salisbury Post), photographer and dog walker who has been a faithful part of the work from the day the center opened in November 2007. Honeycutt’s photographs of adoption center pets made up the centerpieces and were projected on the auditorium screen.
Patti Ann Lynch and Detective Bob DeWitt spoke. Lynch shared stories of the rapport that nursing home residents feel when she visits with her therapy dog, Codger. She encouraged pet owners to seek opportunities to train their dogs to offer a calm presence to adults in need of a benign, accepting presence in their lives.
DeWitt educated the audience on his duties as the animal cruelty investigator in Davie County and lauded the care given by adoption center workers to animal victims of neglect and abuse. Davie County Sheriff Andy Stokes and DeWitt presented citations of merit to adoption center staff members Elaine Crews and Amanda Smyers for their dedication and service to animals.
Auction bidding was competitive. Proceeds support pet care at the society’s adoption center at 291 Eaton Road in Mocksville.
Dolly Urdanick, president, says, “The Humane Society of Davie County warmly thanks its sponsors, donors and guests for supporting Cause for Paws. Their generosity enables us to continue our mission of helping abandoned animals.
