SALISBURY — The city council will receive a presentation Tuesday on the 2020 United States Census at their 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall, 217 S. Main St.
Peter J. Sabo, a partnership specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau, will discuss the importance of the Census to receive federal funding for schools, hospitals, roads and infrastructure.
The city council passed a resolution at their Nov. 19 meeting in support of ensuring every resident is counted. The Rowan County commissioners also passed a census resolution at their Nov. 18 meeting.
Sabo will also speak about how the census responses are safe, secure and protected by federal law.
In other agenda items:
• Police Chief Jerry Stokes will give an update on the department’s crime data and staff in 2019.
• The council will consider designating the Grubb-Sigmon-Weisiger House, at 213 S. McCoy Road, as a Local Historic Landmark.
The Historic Preservation Commission recommended the designation at its meeting Thursday.
The house is a Queen Anne farmhouse and portions were built in 1911, 1927 and 1942.
Applicant Karen C. Lilly-Bowyer said one of the original owners, Ross Ninish Sigmon, was the developer of the Milford Hills area, which had big, Colonial-style homes on the outskirts of the neighborhood and smaller houses inside. She said he saw the significance of preserving the home although a new residential area was built around it.
• Parks and Recreation Director Nick Aceves will propose to change the name of the name of the Greenway Committee to the Greenway, Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee and increase the number of members from nine to 11.
• Assistant Utilities Director Jason Wilson and Finance Director Shannon Moore will give an update on the 2020 revenue bond projects for the Grants Creek Wastewater Project and Water Treatment Plant Improvements. The Local Government Commission will approve or deny the revenue bonds at its March 3 meeting.
