A Century of Women’s Suffrage is something to celebrate and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will hold a Gala on Saturday, March 7, during Women’s History Month to do just that.

“Votes for Women was a long and difficult struggle. It took 133 years for women to be recognized in the U.S. Constitution as full citizens with the enactment of the 19th Amendment in 1920,” according to Dr. Nicole Corry-Sherrill, President of the Salisbury Branch of AAUW. “It took another 45 years and the 1965 Voting Rights Act to secure that right to vote for African American women in the South.”

The Voting Rights Gala, “It’s about Time”, will take place in the Crystal Peeler Lounge at Catawba College and will benefit scholarships for Rowan County students to attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders in May.

Local artists will provide an evening of music from the 1920s-2020. Teresa Moore-Mitchell is an acclaimed classical concert vocalist who has performed at Carnegie Hall and around the world. Her teaching career includes Catawba, Livingstone, Pfeiffer and Davidson Community College.

Destiny Stone is a rising young artist from Mississippi who studied in North Carolina and now makes Salisbury her home. Her original music includes a mixture of gospel, blues, jazz and soul. She is sharing her incredible talent with many venues in our area.

The Ladies of Lee Street came together originally for performances at the Lee Street Theatre. The quartet includes Becky Lippard, Mary Ann McCubbins, Carol Harris and Patsy Parnell, with Susan Trivette as accompanist. They will entertain with some rousing familiar songs to keep your toes tapping.

Buttercup Café will cater an elegant meal and several business women will have their products and services on display and for sale. A deejay will provide music for dining and dancing.
Beer and wine will be available for purchase.
