SALISBURY — Catawba’s women’s basketball team overcame a horrible start and beat Queens 62-51 at Goodman Gym on Wednesday.

The Indians missed 21 of their first 25 shots and had 11 turnovers in the first quarter.

Still, they got it together enough to win. The Indians  (20-4, 15-4) shot 58 percent in the fourth quarter.

Taisha DeShazo scored 22 points. Madi Hallman had 15, and Lyrik Thorne scored 10.

Caitlyn Moore had 18 for the Royals (5-20, 4-15).

Catawba men fall

SALISBURY — Catawba’s men’s basketball team still has never beaten Queens in SAC play.

The Indians lost 94-84 to the Royals on Wednesday at Goodman Gym.

Kenny Dye had 25 for Queens, while Daniel Carr had 23.

Catawba got 21 from Devin Cooper and 19 from Marcell Haskett, who made four 3-pointers.

Ace Carter and Daquan Lilly had 12 points each.

Catawba (18-7, 13-6)  shot 54 percent, but Queens shot 56 percent. Catawba made 11 3-pointers, but Queens (19-5, 14-5)  was  22-for-25 from the foul line.

The game was a battle for second place in the South Atlantic Conference. Lincoln Memorial is well ahead of the pack.

Catawba baseball

MOUNT OLIVE — Hunter Shepherd had three hits, including a homer, as Catawba baseball won 8-5 at Mount Olive on Wednesday.

The Indians got two hits each from Jackson Raper, Cameron Morrison and Bryce Butler. DJ Laxton won in relief after a good start by Kenny  Dollinger. Robbie Cowie notched his second save.

West boys

STATESVILLE — West Rowan’s boys pulled out a 60-55 decision against South Iredell on Wednesday night in a North Piedmont Conference semifinal played in the Statesville gym.

The second-seeded Falcons (14-9) advanced to a championship game that is  scheduled for Friday at Carson. West got 15 points from Chaz McCombs, 11 from Macari Allison and nine from Jalen Moss.

Jonny Hassard got six of his eight points in the fourth quarter.

Gavin Morrison scored 23 for third-seeded South Iredell.

West led by 26-19 at halftime but was only up one going to the fourth quarter.

Carson girls

CHINA GROVE —  Carson girls coach Brooke Stouder says the goal is to win every quarter, and the Cougars went 4-0 in a Wednesday semifinal against Statesville

The top-seeded Cougars (22-3)  won 64-47 and advanced to a Friday championship game that they’ll host against West Rowan at 6 on Friday.

Hannah Isley had a terrific game with 21 points and seven rebounds. She shot 4-for-5 on 3-pointers and was 7-for-11 from the field.

Maci Cooper had 15 points. Cooper was 6-for-6 on free throws and 3-for-6 on 3-pointers.

Isley and Cooper both came off the bench.

Carson was up 30-22 at halftime and expanded its lead with a strong third quarter.

“It was a good win for us,” Stouder said. “Statesville has been playing well at the end of the season. They played very hard and they did a good job against our press.”

Carson made 13 of 16 free throws. Lani Isley had seven points and five rebounds.

Taylor Conrad got Carson started with five early points.

Salisbury girls

SALISBURY — While seventh-seeded Oak Grove was stunning everyone and making the Central Carolina Conference championship game —  on the other side of the bracket it was business as usual for top-seeded Salisbury (24-1).

The championship game is scheduled for Lexington on  Friday at 6 p.m.

The Hornets got off to a slow start on Wednesday but pulled away to beat fourth-seeded West Davidson 52-29 in a  semifinal.

Freshman Kyla Bryant scored a career-high 21 for the Hornets. Jamecia Huntley, another freshman, scored 11, while Anayia Fulson had 10.  Also scoring for the Hornets were Rachel McCullough (3), Jaleiah Gibson (3) and Mary Morgan (4).

North girls

DENTON — North Rowan’s girls won 50-35 against Chatham Central in a Yadkin Valley Conference semifinal on Wednesday.

The second-seeded Cavaliers (19-7) avenged a recent setback to third-seeded Chatham Central and   advanced to a championship game that is scheduled for Friday at South Davidson.

Natavia Taborn led the Cavaliers with 20 points. Hannah Wilkerson had 15, Makiya McDaniel scored eight, and Kamora Cannie added seven.

North won the tournament last season in a surprise.

A.L. Brown boys

CONCORD — A.L. Brown’s second-seeded boys beat sixth-seeded Northwest Cabarrus 62-52 on Wednesday in a South Piedmont Conference semifinal.

Kheni Briggs led the Wonders with 23 points. Mi’Keim Moore had 11 points, and JD Glenn had nine.

Davie boys

PFAFFTOWN — Davie’s boys lost 72-55 to Glenn on Wednesday in a Central Piedmont Conference Tournament semifinal.

Third-seeded Davie (15-10) was short-handed due to illness and injury. Freshman Iverson King led the War Eagles with 18 points.

High school football

West Rowan announced that receiver Jalen Houston and offensive lineman Edwin Fuentes Berrios have accepted invitations to play in the East-West All-Star Game.

Salisbury linebacker Jabril Norman announced last week that he would play in the game.

High school wrestling

The state tournament in Greensboro is scheduled today through Saturday.
