SALISBURY — Sixth-ranked Catawba baseball (12-2) out-slugged No. 1 North Greenville (13-3-1) 11-7 on Tuesday at Newman Park.

The teams combined for nine homers.

Lee Poteat (West Rowan) went 4-for-4 with two homers. Zack Miller also hit two homers. Kenny Dollenger won in relief. Robbie Cowie finished it off.

Hunter Shepherd has been honored for the second time this season as SAC Player of the Week.

This weekend, Catawba travels to Queens for SAC action.

College baseball

Austin Love (West Rowan) is off to a great start for UNC with 10 strikeouts and one walk in nine innings in three relief outings. He has one win and one save.

Bo Rusher (Salisbury) got his first college hit for Gardner-Webb. He had a run-scoring double against Delaware.

College basketball

Catawba’s basketball teams are on the road tonight at Anderson.

It’s a crucial game for the Catawba women who are in second place, one game behind Anderson.

  

Carson girls

CHINA GROVE — Fourth-seeded Carson beat A.C. Reynolds 66-44 on Tuesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Carson  made 10 3-pointers and won its eighth straight game.

Carson was able to blow it open in the third quarter against the 29th-seeded Rockets from Asheville and was able to play everyone.

The fourth-seeded Cougars (24-3) got 18 points from Ellie Wilhelm, 13 from Colbie Perry and 12 from Maci Cooper.

Wilhelm shot 4-for-6 on 3-pointers and scored 10 in the third quarter. Carleigh Perry had eight  rebounds.

Sarah Fletcher led the Rockets (10-14) with 11 points.

Carson hosts No. 13 seed Asheville on Thursday.

West Rowan boys

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan lost to Winston-Salem 63-50 on Tuesday in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

West stayed in the game and was down six with 1:20 remaining.

Macari Allison scored 14 for the 15th-seeded Falcons (15-10). Chaz McCombs scored 11 despite early foul trouble, and Jalen Moss had nine.

Camian Shell had 21 for  18th-seeded Parkland, and Omari Bolden scored 20. Catawba football signee Denoris Wardlow chipped in with eight.

A.L. Brown boys

KANNAPOLIS — JD Glenn scored 20 to lead the A.L. Brown boys to a 78-63 win against Forestview in the first round of the 3A state playoffs on Tuesday.

Kheni Briggs (12), Mi’Keim Moore (11) and Amari Grier (9) were the other top scorers for A.L. Brown (18-8).

Logan Botts, one of the state’s top shooters, tossed in 29 for the Jaguars.

West Rowan girls

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s girls lost to Watauga 56-50 in a 3A first-round playoff game on Tuesday.

The 14th-seeded Falcons (20-6) got 19 points from Abigail Wilson, 18 from Gabby Blabon and 11 from Taylor Poole.

Blabon made four 3-pointers, while Poole made three.

Wilson broke West’s single-season scoring record with 681 points. Her mother, Wendy Hampton Wilson, set the previous record with 668 in the 1993-94 season.

Brelyn Sturgill had 18 points for 19th-seeded  Watauga and Rebeka Farthing had 16.

West led 18-5 after the first quarter, but couldn’t hold off the Pioneers. Sturgill scored nine as Watauga made a rally in the second quarter. Farthing had 10 in the fourth quarter.

Watauga played without standout Brooke Byrd, the team’s No. 2 scorer.

East Rowan girls

East Rowan’s girls ended the season with a 61-43 loss at Hickory on Tuesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

“We played so hard tonight,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “It was intense and competitive. I liked  the effort, but as the game went on, it  got harder and harder for us to score.”

After a tight first quarter, Hickory took a 32-23 halftime lead.

Hickory had a big edge at the foul line, making 26 of 36, while the Mustangs were 7-for-12.

“The game was closer than it sounds, but we couldn’t keep them off the foul line,” Holland said.

Seeded 22nd, East (20-7) got 20 points from Mary Spry and 11 from Adalie Harrison.

Finley Lefevers scored 22 points and 6-foot-5 Shelby Darden had 21 for the 11th-seeded Tornadoes.

“I’m proud of the season we had, especially for the seniors,” Holland said. “ They’ve been through it — from four wins as freshman to 20 this year. We were 1-9 in the conference last year and 7-3 this time. Right now, we’re hurting, but we’ll look back on this season with a great sense of pride.”

GREENSBORO — A.L. Brown’s girls finished the season 10-16.

The Wonders, seeded 31st, lost 75-27 to No. 2 seed Southeast Guilford on Tuesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Jala Campbell led the Wonders with nine points.

Raven Preston scored 26 for the Falcons (24-1), the defending state champs. Kennedi Simmons had 19.

Salisbury boys

SYLVA — Salisbury’s boys romped 64-34 at Smoky Mountain on Tuesday in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

“We played a very complete game,” Salisbury coach Bryan Withers said. “We played pretty good on both ends of the floor and we executed our game plan against a good team.”

Zay Kesler scored 13 for Salisbury. Cameron Stout had 11. The Hornets got points from 10 players.

Mitch Wike led 16th-seeded Smoky Mountain with 10 points.

Salisbury led 15-6 after a quarter and 30-20 at halftime.

The 17th-seeded Hornets (17-9) will play at undefeated No. 1 seed Forest Hills on Thursday in Marshville.

WELCOME — North Davidson’s  sixth-seeded boys won 58-55 in overtime against Central Davidson in the first round of the 2A state playoffs on Tuesday.

Jamarien Dalton led North Davidson (24-4) with 23 points.

Jacob Myers scored 13 for the 27th-seeded Spartans (15-10).

North Davidson will host at Atkins on Thursday.

Central (22-5) led 27-14 at halftime.

Ja’el Miller led the Vikings with 19 points. Mariah Barrie scored 16, and Aniyah Tate had 12.

Seventh-seeded Central Cabarrus hosts SW Guilford on Thursday.

   

Junior college basketball

Jamarius Hairston (Carson) had 25 points and seven rebounds for the third-ranked DCCC Storm in 125-53 win against Mt. Zion on Tuesday.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice.

The first-place team was David Huneycutt, Terrol Kendall, Crystal Clement,  Larry Clifton & Susan Wydner.

The second-place team was Walt Kincaid, Calvin Smith and Mary & Gene Seaford.

Longest putt was won by Kendall. Closest to the pin was Kincaid.
