A firefighter was injured Tuesday morning when he fell about 15 feet through the attic of a home on Mid Sail Road in the Anchor Downs subdivision.
Fire officials confirmed Tuesday afternoon the firefighter is Lt. Ken Womble. He did not suffer any broken bones, just damaged muscles.
Spencer Fire Chief Jay Baker said the firefighter is a veteran. He and about three others were in the home. The firefighter was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was conscious the entire time, Baker said.
The homeowner, Deb Smith, smelled smoke around 7:30 a.m. She was heading out for a morning walk and alerted her husband, Galen. The two searched out the smoke. When they discovered it was coming from the attic, they called 911.
Several fire agencies responded, including EMS.
The initial cause appears to be electrical.
No other injuries were reported.
