Lenoir-Rhyne senior thrower Jocelyn Lowe (East Rowan) was named the   Elite 20 Award winner for women’s indoor track & field, presented by the South Atlantic Conference on Sunday.

The award honors the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average  in each of the league’s 20 team championship sports.

Lowe has a 4.00 GPA while majoring in exercise science and completing 127 credit hours.

College track

WINSTON-SALEM — Catawba’s men took fifth and the women placed sixth at the South Atlantic Conference  Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track.

Catawba  had four podium finishes.

Highlighting those finishes was the winning men’s 4×400 relay team. Chandon Smith, Braxton Ford, Ethan Bemis and Brien Pittman took first to notch a SAC Championship.

Ethan Bemis was third in the mile.

The women’s 4×400 team of Skylar Payne, Gianna Gutierrez-Principe, Makayla Ward and Samantha Payne placed second. Samantha Payne finished second in the 400 meters.

Madison Lowery (South Rowan) was ninth in the women’s mile run.

  

College golf

SALISBURY — Catawba’s men are tied for first after Monday’s first round of the Richard Rendleman Invitational  at the 6,709-yard, par-71 Country Club of Salisbury.

Catawba’s Tanner Bibey shares the individual lead after opening with a 3-under 68. He’s tied with Brandon Jones, of Fayetteville State.

Fayetteville State matched Catawba’s 295 to share first in the team scores. Lenoir-Rhyne is at 299, and Tusculum 300. Livingstone is fifth after a round of 304. Titus Okwong leads the Blue Bears with a 74 and is tied for seventh

College tennis

Freshman Payton Holt  (West Rowan) won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as Emory & Henry beat William Peace 9-0 in women’s tennis on Sunday.

College softball

Coastal Carolina freshman Mary Sobataka (West Rowan) has started three games and is 4-for-11 with three runs scored.

College baseball

Catawba Valley Community College’s Chandler Blackwelder (East Rowan) has batted .500  (17-for-34) in 10 games with the Red Hawks. He has five doubles, three triples and a homer.

Riley Myers (Salisbury, Catawba) pitched three scoreless innings for Wake Forest in Sunday’s 9-5 win against Sacred Heart.

UNC Wilmington freshman pitcher Jack Fisher (Salisbury) made his college debut vs. N.C. State and got his first strikeout.

Maven Parker (Concord) pitched a 5-0  shutout for the Surry CC Knights against the Belmont Abbey jayvees on Monday. Bryson Bebber (South Rowan) had two hits for Surry.

College lacrosse

SALISBURY — Freshman Yasir Stroud scored 36 seconds into overtime as host Catawba rallied for an 11-10 victory over Maryville (Mo.) in men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Stroud’s fourth goal capped a dramatic comeback for Catawba, which trailed 10-8 with 30 seconds left.

College swimming

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  — Catawba concluded action at the ECAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Sunday at LeJeune Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Catawba men finished 10th and the women placed 11th.

 

College basketball

The South Atlantic Conference Tournament starts Wednesday.

Catawba’s men are at home against Newberry in the 3 vs. 6 game at 7 p.m.

Catawba’s women are on the road at Newberry in the 4 vs. 5 game at 7 p.m..

  

Local golf

The McCanless Couples enjoyed a closely contested Captains Choice on Sunday.

The team of Susan Wydner, Harry Owen and Azalee  & David Huneycutt took first place.

Ralph Carver, Calvin Smith, Walt Kincaid and Mary & Gene Seaford placed second.

Walt Kincaid had closest to the pin. Azalea Huneycutt  had longest putt.

HS baseball

CHINA GROVE — Davie won 8-1 at Carson on Monday in the season opener for both teams.

Joe Johnson had two hits and three RBIs for the War Eagles. Daniel Lawson had two hits. Spencer Nifong was credited with the win and struck out six in 3 2/3 innings.

Six Carson players had a hit each. Logan Rogers (0-1) took the loss. He allowed six runs in five innings, but only one run was earned.

GRANITE QUARRY —  Wayne Mize socked two homers, including a grand slam, as East Rowan opened with a 10-5 win against Cox Mill at Staton Field on Monday.

Mize drove in six runs. He walked in his other two at-bats. Charlie Klingler and Blake White had two hits each. JD Basinger and Cameron Padgett combined for 10 strikeouts on the mound.

Tyler Zedalis homered for the Chargers. Martin Gair had two hits and two RBIs.

MIDWAY — Tanner Tesh pitched six shutout innings as Oak Grove beat South Rowan 6-0 in a Central Carolina Conference game to open the season.

Seth Polen, Nathan Kidder and Tucker Myers had two RBIs each for the Grizzlies.

Luke Hiskey pitched five innings and took the loss. Drew Watkins led South at the plate.

WELCOME — North Davidson scored 12 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 21-3 CCC victory against Salisbury on Monday.

HS softball

Kali Morton pitched a one-hitter and struck out 16 to lead Mooresville to a 5-0 win against Davie softball on Monday.

Morton went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

HS soccer

Madison Henry scored three goals as South Rowan opened with a 6-3 win against East Rowan on Monday.  Mackenzie Chabala scored two goals for the Raiders, while Ambar Hernandez had one.

West Rowan won 5-1 against Bandys on Monday.

  Selma Mehmedovic and Mackenna Clifton scored two goals each. Anna Mead had a goal and an assist.

Brittany Vanhoose had two assists. Lesli Guerrero had an assist. Clifton had an an assist.  Karen Anaya and Kelcie Love split time in goal. Both made one save.

Mid. school baseball

West Rowan Middle opened Monday with a 7-6 win against Corriher-Lipe.

Drew Burton and Brice Knox led the Bulldogs with three hits apiece.  Maddox Moore was credited with the win, while Burton collected the save.

West plays Mooresville on Thursday.
