Salisbury expects to have more than $500,000 in community development money to work with in fiscal year 2010, including $82,700 from a federal stimulus grant.
Senior Planner Janet Gapen reviewed Tuesday the revenues expected for the next fiscal year.
They include the stimulus grant, $305,021 in Community Development Block Grant funds, $104,593 in HOME funds and $70,000 in program income.
The funding focuses mostly on neighborhood revitalization efforts in the Park Avenue, East End, West End and Jersey City areas.
Part of the money can be allocated to public service agencies.
Salisbury City Council heard five requests for some of the public service money Tuesday.
Livingstone College asked that some funds be set aside for sidewalk construction along Monroe and Partee streets.
No specific dollar amount has yet been attached to Livingstone’s request.
The Master Gardeners program, which oversees the West End demonstration garden on Brenner Avenue, requests $2,000.
The Community Care Clinic seeks $15,000 toward support of its dental program.
Rowan Helping Ministries has asked for $25,000 to pay for part-time shelter supervisors
Family Crisis Council has requested $26,208 to pay for salaries at its battered women’s shelter.
In other city news, several events are coming up:
– The Salisbury Fire Department will hold a memorial service at 8:45 Saturday morning to honor Victor Isler and Justin Monroe, the Salisbury firefighters who died in the Salisbury Millwork Co. fire a year ago.
The public is invited to attend the service at the Firefighters Memorial, located adjacent to the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, 1600 S. Main St.
– Downtown Salisbury Inc. will host a St. Paddy’s Night Out from 5-9 p.m. next Friday (March 13) in the central business district.
– In connection with the St. Paddy’s Night Out, the Fire Department will be host for a chili cook-off among area fire departments. Proceeds go to the Rowan County United Way Lay-off Assistance Fund.
– The Public Art Committee will dedicate the sculpture “Sentinel No. 2” at 3 p.m. March 17 at the intersection of East Fisher and South Lee streets.
