CHINA GROVE —  Carson’s baseball team won 7-0 against North Rowan  on Thursday in a non-conference game.

Dylan Driver had a two-run triple to get the Cougars (2-1) started and drove in three runs.

Jake Davis had three hits and scored two runs.

Aaron Misenheimer pitched five scoreless innings, and Davis completed the shutout for the Cougars.

Caelan Stinson, Bryan Lawson and Jordan Goodine had North’s three hits.

Charlie Durham pitched three innings and took the loss in the season opener for North.

HS soccer

South Rowan won 2-0 against West Rowan on Thursday.

Madison Henry and Mackenzie Chabala scored for the Raiders (2-0).

Kelcie Love made seven saves for the Falcons (1-2).

Salisbury opened with a 4-2 victory over the Blue Comets of Asheboro in non-conference action on Thursday.

It was Salisbury’s first  soccer action (girls or boys) against Asheboro in coach Matt Parrish’s 19 seasons with the program.

“After traveling in the second round last year, I decided we needed to bulk up the non-conference schedule.” Parrish said. “Every non conference match we have this year is against a conference champion from last year.”

The Hornets got goals from Katherine Sullivan, Sutton Webb, Caroline Cardelle and Lillie Rusher.

Recording assists for Salisbury were Webb (2) and Piper Muire.

Salisbury got excellent play from Elle Kennedy, Madelyne Lawrence and freshman goalkeeper Hannah Schmeltzer, who recorded nine saves.

Salisbury hosts CCC opponent Thomasville on Monday.

  

HS softball

Carson won 16-1 against South Rowan in a non-conference game on Thursday.

Liza Simmerson went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Allie Burns had two hits and scored three runs. Winning pitcher Madison Anderson had two hits and four RBIs. Sierra Ratliff, Kary Hales and Skyler Smith had two hits. Smith had two RBIs. Maci Cooper had two RBIs.

Makenzie McGuire drove in Madison McGuire for South’s only run.

HS basketball

North Rowan All-Yadkin Valley Conference boys basketball players are Brandon White, Zay Davis, Denerio Robinson and Kendrell Goodes.

HS wrestling

All-North Piedmont Conference wrestlers include West Rowan’s Lane Adkins, Nathan Estrada, Seth Simmerson and Baiden Suddarth; Carson’s Christian Kluttz and Noah Basinger, and East Rowan’s Nate Burrage, Oren Bost, Tayron Frost and Luke Heglar.

North Iredell’s Chandler Jordan was named NPC Wrestler of the Year, while Statesville’s Andrew Collins is the NPC Coach of the Year.

A.L. Brown’s Jordan Ackerman, Kaleb McGee and Gavin Hartsell made the All-South PiedmontConference team. Central Cabarrus’ Marcus Jackson is the SPC Wrestler of the Year, while Central’s Ed Masterton was named SPC Coach of the Year.

HS tennis

South Rowan’s boys won 8-1 against East Davidson in a Central Carolina Conference match.

Singles winners were: Joey Caraccio, Matthew Correll, Noah Steedley, Richard Gould and Noah King.

• In a 5-4 win against West Rowan,  South got singles wins from Caraccio, Steedley and King. Caraccio/Steedley and King/Gould won in doubles.

College basketball

Catawba seniors Devin Cooper and Marcell Haskett have earned spots on the All-South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball team.

  Cooper took home first team All-SAC honors, while Haskett was an honorable mention selection.

Lincoln Memorial guard Courvoisier McCauley was voted  SAC Player of the Year, while teammate Cameron Henry was the Defensive Player of the Year.

Anderson’s Crosby James II was voted the SAC Freshman of the Year, with LMU’s Josh Schertz tabbed as the SAC Coach of the Year.

Cooper is averaging just over 18 points a game this season and leads the team in both assists (119) and steals (43).

Haskett is scoring a team-best 18.5 points a game and is coming off a career-high 38 points in the opening game of the SAC Tournament. He leads the team with 77 three-pointers and is second in both assists (77) and steals (40).

Davidson County Community College’s Jamarius Hairston (Carson) had 27 points and nine rebounds in a 101-74 win against Fayetteville Tech.

Hairston is getting some offers, including a recent one from UVa-Wise.

Women’s basketball

Catawba junior Taisha DeShazo has been voted first team All-South Atlantic Conference for Women’s Basketball, while Lyrik Thorne was an honorable mention pick and was also named to the SAC All-Freshman team.

Anderson guard Alexy Mollenhauer was voted the Player of the Year, while Wingate’s Teliyah Jeter was voted the Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Carson-Newman’s Braelyn Wykle was voted the SAC Freshman of the Year,  with Anderson’s Jonathon Barbaree tabbed as SAC  Coach of the Year.

DeShazo leads Catawba in scoring at 14.6 a game.

Thorne has started all 28 games as a freshman, scoring at a 10.4 clip. She has handed out a team-high 71 assists and also leads the squad with 54 steals. Thorne has canned 42 three-point goals.

Catawba track

Catawba sophomore MeKayla White has qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. White will compete in the long jump at the Championships which are being held on March 13-14  in Birmingham, Ala.

  

Running

A Mocksville physician will be honored at the 32nd Annual Shamrock Run on Saturday, March 14.

Linda Harris, race coordinator, said a “special tribute” would be paid to Dr. Joel Edwards, who has been involved with the Shamrock Run from the beginning as both a sponsor and a participant.  Dr. Edwards is undergoing treatment for throat cancer.

Runners and fun walkers can still register for the Shamrock Run’s 5K and 10K events on Friday, March 13, or on race day, March 14, at St. Francis of Assisi’s church hall, 862 Yadkinville Road, Mocksville.   The 5 K Run will start at 8:15 a.m. and the 10K race begins at 9 a.m.
