MOCKSVILLE — Cullen Davis pitched a shutout as West Rowan’s baseball team beat Davie County 3-0 on Monday.

Davis held Davie to three hits. He struck out nine and walked two.

West scored a run in the second inning and held that 1-0 lead until it scratched  out two more in the seventh. Davis and Casey Gouge had two hits each for the Falcons (3-0), who did most of their offensive damage with the help of errors.

Josh Westmoreland had two hits for Davie (1-3). Spencer Nifong pitched into the seventh inning for  the War Eagles.

In North Rowan’s 12-4, 10-0 doubleheader sweep of Abemarle on Friday, the Cavaliers stole 12 bases.

Charlie Durham went 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Bryan Lawson, who pitched a no-hitter in the second game, had two doubles. Chase Shoaf drove in five runs. Kaleb Burleyson had   three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.  Jordan Goodine had three RBIs and three steals. Caelan Stinson had two hits and three steals. Travis Berry had three hits.

SPENCER — Salisbury outscored North Rowan 15-8 in a non-conference game on Monday.

Vance Honeycutt went 4-for-4 for the Hornets, including a homer and two doubles.

Parker Lippard had three hits and four RBIs.

Max Crawford and Archie Dees had two hits each for the Hornets (1-2).   Chad van der Poel stole four bases.

Honeycutt pitched three innings as the Hornets took an 8-2 lead. Nick Peltz pitched the last four innings.

Losing pitcher Durham and Shoaf had two RBIs each for Cavs  (2-2).

CONCORD — Carson won 7-3 against Robinson in a non-conference game on Monday.

Jake Harris had two hits and three RBIs for the Cougars (3-1).

Harris’ two-run single in the second put Carson ahead to stay.

Logan Rogers and Dylan Driver had three hits each. Jake Davis had two hits and two steals.

Rogers, Chase Drinkard and Davis got the job done on the mound. They held the Bulldogs to four hits.

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan held on to beat Hickory Ridge 3-2 in a non-conference game at Staton Field on Monday.

Charlie Klingler and Cameron Padgett had two hits for the Mustangs (3-1). Padgett stole two bases.

JD Basinger pitched five shutout innings for the win and left with a 3-0 lead. Padgett got four outs befor Jake Hunter came in to get the last two with a groundou and strikeout with the tying run on base.

Ethan Young had two hits for the Bulls. Young and Adam Wilkerson drove in runs.

HS soccer

SALISBURY — Salisbury overwhelmed Thomasville 9-0 in Central Carolina Conference soccer on Monday

The Hornets (2-0, 1-0) got two goals from Sutton Webb, Piper Muire and Anna Grace Woolly.  Caroline Cardelle, Lillie Rusher and Kendall Colwell had one each.

It was the first career goal for Colwell, a freshman who was celebrating her 15th birthday.

Assists were credited to Muire (3), Webb (2), Rusher, Abby Campion and Sophie Chmiel.

Hannah Schmeltzer (starter) Abigail Perez, and Caroline Clark combined for the shutout in goal.

“Muire and Webb were really the table setters for tonight’s match despite each playing far less than their usual minutes. Their unselfish play really allowed other girls to get involved and have success,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

Salisbury got excellent play from Tae Wilson and Parker Jenkins.

Next up for the Hornets is a match at West Davidson on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

West Rowan’s varsity girls lost to Concord 4-0. Kelcie Love made 10 saves for the Falcons (1-3).

West’s jayvees tied 1-1 with Concord.  Gabrielle Wood scored the goal. Emily Kelly made six saves.

South Rowan (3-0) opened CCC play with a 5-2 win against East Davidson on Monday. Madison Henry scored four goals  and has 134 in a record-setting career.

Ambar Hernandez also scored for the Raiders.

HS golf

In Central Carolina Conference golf at Lexington Golf Club,  Salisbury, Ledford and West Davidson shot 164. Oak Grove shot 166.

Salisbury’s Hank Robins was medalist with a 35, and Will Webb shot 41 for the Hornets. Luke Graeber and Will Fowler had 44s.

Andrew Coward (39) and Andrew Jackson (40) led South Rowan. The Raiders shot 181.

Tyler Partee shot 37 for Ledford.

HS tennis

Salisbury won 8-1 against West Davidson in Monday’s Central Carolina Conference match.

Sean Archer, Will Koontz, Parker Chmiel, Merritt Mason and Bennett Clark won singles matches for the Hornets.

Archer/Chmiel, Juan Salazar/Koontz and Clark/Mason won in doubles.

North Stanly won 7-2 against North Rowan in a Yadkin Valley Conference match on Monday.

  

HS softball

CONCORD — Carson won 9-0 against Robinson in a non-conference game on Monday.

Liza Simmerson  hit a grand slam for the Cougars (3-1). Kary Hales also homered.

Freshman Lonna Addison  pitched the shutout.

Local golf

The team of Eric Edwards/Andrew Beaver shot 62-62 — 124 to win the Championship Flight in the  Two-Man Mulligan Tournament at Warrior.

Bern Gregory/Daniel Walsh shot 62-63 — 125 for second place, and Jake Kramer/Sean Kramer took third with 63-63 — 126.

Also in the Championship Flight were Derek Paschal/Sam Correll (128),  Thad Sprinkle/Bryson Sprinkle (129), Derek Lipe/Daryl Lipe (129), Corey Basinger/Scott Burnett (131) and Scott Tucker/Riley Tucker (134).

College basketball

Catawba sophomore Terrence Whitfield was named to the  South Atlantic all-tournament team.

Whitfield scored a career-high 31 points in a semifinal loss to Queens, hitting on 11-of-16 shots and going 4-of-7 from behind the arc.

  

College softball

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Catawba won twice at Limestone on Sunday.

Jordan Dean’s three-run homer provided a 3-2 win in the opener. Summer Howerton (1-0)  threw five innings and was the winning pitcher. Brooke Walser got a save.

• In the second game, Catawba (10-12) won 2-1, scoring twice in the top of the eighth after regulation play ended in a scoreless tie.

Dean singled in Carlee Brawley with Catawba’s first run, and Gracie Gibson’s grounder to short scored Taylor Martin with  the second one.

Limestone got a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Madison Hunter and Brooke Walser got the job done in the circle. Walser (3-4) got the win in relief.

College lacrosse

SALISBURY —  Catawba dominated the second half and beat Mars Hill 13-4 in South Atlantic Confernce men’s lacrosse on Saturday.

Yasir Stroud scored three goals and had an assist to pace Catawba (2-3, 1-0).

Aryn Dorr had a school-record 20 saves for Catawba’s women in Friday’s 16-11 loss to Young Harris.

College volleyball

Catawba director of volleyball Patrick Nicholas  announced the signing of  All-State setter Sidney Bing (Gaston Day), hitters Allison Bryant (Kelseyville, Calif.) and Arianna Colon (Orlando, Fla.) and libero Gabrielle Kuzma (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).

Mid. school golf

Erwin hosted a quad match on Monday at McCanless.

Erwin won the match with a score of (161), defeaing Gray Stone (194), North Hills (209) and Southeast (217).

Erwin’s Jaden Sprinkle was medalist with a score of (35). Landon Merrellshot 36. Also scoring for the Eagles were Keegan Merrell (43) and Addison Queen (47).

Nathan Wetmore’s 43 led Gray Stone. Madden Moody’s 47 paced North Hills. Lucas Mitchell shot 49 to lead Southeast.

Northwest Cabarrus’ Cooper Burris played as an individual and shot 38 for third place.

North Hills’  D’Jovany Worley, who has one arm, was playing his second golf match. He shot a 55 and made his first bogey.

Mid. school baseball

West Rowan won 5-4 against China Grove.

Damon Oles earned the win. Tyler Kepley had a double and Eli Graham and Brice Knox had RBIs for the Bulldogs (2-1).

West plays at Knox on Thursday.
