Former Catawba receiver Eric Morman has been named as head football coach at Northwest Cabarrus.

Morman had a fine career at Catawba (2008-11), making 132 catches for 1,399 yards in his career.

As a sophomore, he had a 13-catch game against Carson-Newman.

Morman came to Catawba from the strong Richmond Senior program.

He followed his older brother, Charles, to Catawba. Charles was a starting defensive back for Catawba.

Morman had an assistant coaching stint at A.L. Brown. That led to a chance to be the head coach at West Stanly. He coached the Colts for two seasons before heading to North Meck, where’s he coached the last three years.

Morman was hired to replace Brandon Gentry, who had great success with the Trojans, and is now getting the program started at the new school – West Cabarrus.

Central Cabarrus has hired Zach Bevilacqua as its new head coach.

As an offensive lineman,  Bevilacqua played collegiately at Elon. His long coaching career includes a stint as an assistant coach at West Rowan (2012-2013).

Bevilacqua was hired to replace Kenneth McClamrock, who stepped down. McClamrock coached East Rowan before taking the Central Cabarrus job.

College baseball

WILSON — Catawba routed Ohio Dominican 17-0 on Tuesday.

Jackson Raper had a huge day with two homers and six RBIs. He hit a grand slam in the second and a two-run homer in the third.

Hunter Shepherd also hit two homers and drove in five runs for the Indians (18-3). Cameron Morrison went 3-for-3 with a homer.

Jeremy Simpson, Lee Poteat, Joe Butts and Henderson Lentz had two hits each.

Tyrese Hearst,the first of three Catawba hurlers, was credited with the win.

Clayton Gilmore (Carson) and Cord Butler (A.L.  Brown) had good days for Southeastern Community College (Whiteville) on Tuesday.

Gilmore struck out five in three innings and allowed one hit. Butler had three hits (two doubles) and four RBIs.

HS soccer

Madison Henry scored three goals and Mackenzie Chabala had two in South Rowan’s 5-0 win against West Stanly on Tuesday.

HS basketball

All-district teams were released by the NC Basketball Coaches Association.

  West Rowan senior Abigail Wilson made first team all-district, while Salisbury senior Anayia Fulson and freshman Kyla Bryant made the second team.

Forbush senior Parkley Hennings was named district player of the year.

Rowan is in a district that includes many counties, including Iredell, Surry, Yadkin, Caldwell, Stokes, Ashe, Alleghany, Davie and Wilkes.

A.L. Brown sophomore Kheni Briggs made second team all-district. Cabarrus is in a district with the Union and Mecklenburg schools.

Davie senior Brooks Johnson made third team all-district. Johnson and Davie sophomore Zaharee Maddox were named recently to the All-Central Piedmont Conference team.

  

HS baseball

LANDIS — South Rowan scored twice in the sixth inning to break a tie and beat Central Davidson 5-3 in Central Carolina Conference action on Tuesday.

Jack Weaver, Ty Hubbard and Drew Huffman got hits in the sixth to put South (1-2, 1-2) on top, and Luke Hiskey  squeezed in an insurance run.

Hiskey pitched a complete game for the Raiders, who got their first  win.

Nolan Eudy had two hits.

SPENCER — North Rowan lost 15-1 to South Stanly in Yadkin Valley Conference baseball on Tuesday.

South Stanly had 15 hits.

Losing pitcher Bryan Lawson and Kaleb Burleyson had the only hits for the Cavaliers (2-3, 2-1).

Tanner Tesh pitched six scoreless innings as Oak Grove beat Ledford 2-0 in a Central Carolina Conference game.

SALISBURY — Parker Lippard keyed Salisbury’s 4-3 Central Carolina Conference win against East Davidson on Tuesday.

Lippard had two hits, including a run-scoring double, and two RBIs.

Chad van der Poel’s bunt scored Lippard with the decisive run for the Hornets (2-2, 1-2) in the bottom of the fifth.

Max Crawford pitched four strong innings. JT Taylor pitched the fifth and got the win. Lippard pitched the sixth and seventh for the save.

KANNAPOLIS — Cale Oehler and Zach Burgbacher pitched Cox Mill to a  5-2 South Piedmont Conference win against A.L. Brown on Tuesday.

Isaiah Black and Austin Lowery had two hits each for the Wonders. Jacob Baucom had a double.

  

HS softball

East Rowan split Monday’s non-conference doubleheader with Cox Mill.

The Mustangs (1-2) lost  5-2 in the first game. Kaitlyn Samples had two hits.

• East won 6-4 in the second game. Samples went 3-for-3. Haley Strange had two hits, including a homer.  Victoria Lewis was 4-for-5. Karley Teague was the winning pitcher.

Madison McGuire and Breanna Ramseur had the only hits for South Rowan in a 16-0 Central Carolina Conference loss to Central Davidson on Tuesday.

Salisbury lost to East Davidson 6-1 in eight innings in Central Carolina Conference baseball on Tuesday.

Salisbury led 1-0 going to the seventh, but winning pitcher Maci Campbell tripled and scored on a groundout to tie the game.

Salem Hill hit a two-run homer in the eighth for the Golden Eagles.

Ellen Yang had two hits and scored the run for Salisbury. In the circle, Yang struck out 15 batters and allowed five hits. J

Journie Dawson and Caroline Cozart also had hits for the Hornets.

CHINA GROVE — Mount Pleasant got a homer from Brianna Herring and won 9-4 at Carson on Tuesday.

Morgan Maddaluna had four hits for the Tigers.

Liza Simmerson had three hits for the Cougars (3-2). Kary Hales and Allie Burns had two hits each.

A.L. Brown won 9-1 against Cox Mill in South Piedmont Conference action on Tuesday.

Tali Hagler was the winning pitcher.

Maddy Daniels and Kaylee Yow went 4-for-4.

Kaylyn Belfield, Xan Moose, Kayleigh Skinner and Lindsay Wolford  had two  hits apiece

HS tennis

West Rowan swept the doubles matches and pulled out a 5-4 North Piedmont Conference win against East Rowan on Tuesday.

West (1-2) got singles wins from Trevor Mervine and Nathan Winecoff.

Kevin Sullivan/Noah Arntsen, Mervine/Abe Davis and Winecoff/Tanner Stamp won in doubles.

Landon Shuping, Gavin McDaniel, Drew Roane and  Ryan Brady won singles matches for the Mustangs (1-1).

All-CCC teams

Salisbury’s Zay Kesler,  Nate Brown and Jalon Walker made the All-Central Carolina Conference boys basketball team.

South Rowan’s Braden Graham made the team.

Conference player of the year is North Davidson’s Jamarien Dalton, with Lexington’s Alex Holt runner-up.

Central Davidson’s Dustin Tysinger is the CCC  Coach of the Year.

Salisbury’s Kyla Bryan, Anayia Fulson,  Rachel McCullough and Jamecia Huntley made the All-CCC girls basketball team.

South Rowan’s Bethany Rymer made the team.

North Davidson’s Emily Hege is the conference’s player of the year. Salisbury freshman Bryant was runner-up. Thomasville’s Ann Ferguson was named the league’s coach of the year. Salisbury’s Lakai Brice, who led the Hornets to an 18-0 record in the CCC, was runner-up.

Salisbury’s Christian Sierra, Javon White, Michael Lowry and Trey Wilhoit made the All-CCC wrestling team, along with South Rowan’s  Jacob Cox, Gabriel Kincaid and Samuel Kincaid Ledford’s Logan MacFarland was the CCC’s wrestler of the  year. Central Davidson’s Jay Lineberry was named CCC Coach of the Year.

Salisbury’s Roshen Amin and South Rowan’s Braxton Vagner made the All-CCC boys swim team.

Co-swimmers of the year were Lexington’s Isaac Haut and Oak Grove’s Landon Roten. Oak Grove’s Rachel Greene is the coach of the year.

Salisbury’s Emily Knorr, Katie Knorr, Anna Grace Woolly, Sage Huffman and Phoebe Hollingsworth made the All-CCC girls swim team.

Salisbury’s Sallie Pittman was named CCC Coach of the Year. Swimmer of the year for the CCC was North Davidson’s Morgan Dennis.

Mid. school golf

Salisbury Academy traveled to Rock Barn to compete in a quad match on Tuesday.

Salisbury Academy (5-2) shot 176 and finished second to Hickory Christian (173). Concordia shot 203, while Newton-Conover shot 241.

SA was paced by John McCoy (40), Hank Webb (42), Warren Fesperman (44) and Drew Aron (50).
