WILSON — Jackson Raper had five hits, including two homers, as Catawba’s baseball team outscored California (Pa.) 14-11 on Wednesday  at  Fleming Stadium.

Raper went 8-for-10 with four homers and 10 RBIs in Catawba’s two games this week in Wilson.

Zack Miller had a homer and two doubles in Wednesday’s slugfest and drove in four runs. Joe Butts had three hits and two RBIs. Adding two hits each for the Indians were Hunter Shepherd and Cameron Morrison.

Catawba starter Kenny Dollenger struck out eight in four innings.

Caleb Link got the win. He got the last out in the seventh when Catawba trailed 8-4. The Indians turned the game around with an eight-run eighth.

Robbie Cowie was able to close it. He fanned three in two innings.

Catawba (19-3) has won 19 of 20 after starting the season 0-2.

College basketball

Newberry’s Luke Gibson, a former North Stanly High standout, was named to the Academic All-America Division II men’s basketball team.

Guilford’s Will Leckonby (Salisbury) has made 107 3-pointers and will rank 12th in program history entering his senior season.

College golf

Catawba’s Tanner Bibey was named the South Atlantic Conference  Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Bibey, a junior from Walnut Cove, captured individual medalist honors and led the Catawba Indians to a first-place finish at the Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury.

He shot 3-under 68 in the opening round of the tournament and  even-par 71 in the second round.

UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 74-71-72 — 217 in the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Lyerly tied for 21st.

College lacrosse

SALISBURY — Catawba won 12-9 against Assumption in men’s lacrosse on Wednesday.

Christian Norrie scored five goals for Catawba (3-3).

College tennis

Catawba’s tennis teams lost to Wingate on Wednesday in South Atlantic Conference action.

Catawba’s women (4-7, 0-2) lost 7-0. Catawba’s men  (1-8, 0-2) fell 5-2.

HS tennis

Carson edged East Rowan 5-4 in North Piedmont Conference tennis on Wednesday.

Nathaniel Kimball, Ethen Fesperman and Tyler Seamon won in singles for the Cougars. Seamon/Andrew Beaver and Fesperman/Parker Steele won doubles matches.

Landon Shuping, Gavin McDaniel and  Ryan Brady won for East in singles. Shuping/Jaden Collins won  in doubles.

Salisbury beat Lexington 9-0 in CCC tennis on Wednesday.

HS softball

MOUNT ULLA — Whitley Arnott pitched a three-hitter and struck out 14 batters, with no walks, on Wednesday.

Arnott led West Rowan (2-0) to a 5-1 win against Northwest Cabarrus.

Kenadi Sproul had two hits and scored two runs for the Falcons. Taylor Walton had two RBIs. Reagan Haggas was 1-for-2 and drove in a run.

Ashley Gordon hit a homer for the Trojans.

CONCORD — Haley Strange struck out nine batters as East Rowan beat Concord 13-1 on Wednesday. Mackenzie Misenheimer had four hits for the Mustangs (2-2). Maddie Schroeder and Kaitlyn Samples had three hits apiece.

  Karli Queen, Caitlyn Sechrist and Sydney Dirks hit home runs for Davie County in a 13-6 loss to Starmount on Tuesday.

HS baseball

MOORESVILLE — Cam Clonch pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven to leada Mooresville to a 1-0 win against A.L. Brown.

Aiden Schenck pitched into  the sixth for the Wonders. Mooresville had only two hits. Isaiah Black had the only hit for A.L. Brown.

CONCORD — Cox Mill pounded out 16 hits and beat Carson 10-5 in a non-conference game on Wednesday.

Carson (3-2) tied the game at 5-all with a four-run third, but it was all Chargers (3-2) after that.

Dylan Driver had three hits for Carson.

Ryan Street took the loss.

Darrien Whitaker and Chandler Riley had three hits for  the Chargers. Martin Gair pitched four inings, and Tyler Zedalis handled the last three.

NEW LONDON — Wayne Mize launched a three-run homer and East Rowan got great pitching from Jake Hunter and Mattox Henderson in a 6-0 win against North Stanly on Wednesday.

Hunter allowed one hit in five innings and struck out six for the Mustangs  (4-1). Henderson had three strikeouts in two innings and allowed one hit.

Mize had two hits, scored twice and stole a base. Cameron Padgett had two RBIs.

MOUNT ULLA — Casey Gouge pitched four strong innings and drove in two runs as West Rowan (4-0) routed Northwest Cabarrus 11-1 on Wednesday.

Lane Adkins had a two-run triple in West’s 11-run first inning. Cullen Davis had a run-scoring double and drove in two.

Cole Pletcher had two hits for the Trojans (2-2).

HS soccer

WALLBURG — Madison Henry scored two first-half goals as South Rowan edged Ledford 2-1 in Central Carolina Conference soccer on Wednesday.

Cheyanne Hunter did the goal-keeping for the Raiders (5-0).

MOUNT PLEASANT — West Rowan romped 9-0 against Mount Pleasant on   Wednesday in a non-conference game.

Anna Mead, MacKenna Clifton, Selma Mehmedovic and Brittany Vanhoose scored two goals each. Lauren Corriher scored a goal and had four assists for the Falcons (2-3).

Lesli Guerrero.  Brenda Mancia, Vanhoose and  Clifton had assists. Karen Anaya made four saves.

TYRO — Piper Muire scored the only goal as Salisbury beat West Davidson 1-0 on Wednesday in CCC soccer.

Muire scored with just under seven minutes left.

Salisbury was a player down for the last 33 minutes after two yellow cards were issued.

“West Davidson dominated the first half, but we made adjustments and found a way to get forward. We out-shot them the last 20 minutes,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said.

Lillie Rusher and Clara Brown were among the defensive standouts for the Hornets (3-0, 2-0).

“West Davidson was the more physical team,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “It was a tough, gritty win. The girls showed a lot of heart against a very tough opponent. We competed right to the final whistle.”

Salisbury is scheduled to travel to CATA on Friday for a 5 p.m. match.

    

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice. The first-place team was Mary Seaford and  Azalee & David Huneycutt.   Azalee  Huneycutt was closest to the pin. Second place went to Calvin Smith,  Susan Wydner and Ralph & Pam Carver.
