SPENCER — Spencer Police have identified the moped operator killed in a Tuesday single-vehicle crash on North Salisbury Avenue as 62-year-old Darnell Keith.

The crash occurred at 2:55 p.m. at 419 N. Salisbury Ave., near Jefferson Avenue.

According to Spencer Police spokesman 1st Sgt. M.N. Brigman, it appears Keith was not paying attention when he struck the utility pole. A witness told police Keith was looking back over his shoulder at the same time that he struck the pole. Keith, whose last known address was Henderson Street in East Spencer, died at the scene.

Brigman said officers have concluded their investigation. Multiple agencies responded to the scene Tuesday, including Spencer Police Department, Spencer Fire Department, East Spencer Police Department and Rowan County Emergency Services.
