Rowan County reports 44 positive COVID-19 cases

SALISBURY — For the second day in a row, the number of positive COVID-19 cases jumped by seven patients, bringing the county’s total to at least 44, according to the Rowan County Department of Public Health.
A news release said there have been 738 specimens submitted for testing. Of the 44 positive cases, 13 were travel-related and 31 were community-acquired.
Officials said 11 patients have recovered, six people are hospitalized and one person has died. Health officials continue to follow-up with the 26 individuals.
The results come from the N.C. State Laboratory of Public Health and all reporting hospital and commercial labs.
The largest number of cases in Rowan County are in the 28147 and 28144 zip codes, where there are 14 and 12 confirmed cases, respectively. Spencer’s zip code, 28159 had the third-largest number of cases, with 7, according to the county’s online zip code map.
The average age of local cases is 50.1.
As of Friday, there were 31,598 tests completed in the state. Of those, 2,093 have been positive for COVID-19. There have been a total of 19 deaths reported in the state, and 259 people are currently hospitalized, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. This number reflects the 86 counties reporting information.
In a media briefing Friday afternoon, Gov. Roy Cooper said, “COVID-19 is still spreading quickly and that we are in a crucial time period for flattening the curve, no one is immune and currently, there is no vaccine.”
“North Carolinians have the power to help. You can stay home. If you must go out, you can keep physical distance. You have the power to slow the spread,” Cooper said.
