Morning storms bring power outages, downed trees to Rowan

Power outages swept across Rowan County Monday when morning storms brought wind gusts between 39 and 51 mph.
The Kannapolis, Rockwell and the High Rock Lake area, in particular, were hotspots for outages, with hundreds of people in those communities without power well into the afternoon. At its peak, there were nearly 5,000 customers in Rowan County without power, according to Duke Energy. In Kannapolis, police and firefighters responded to 36 incidents that were storm-related.
While property damage was scattered across the county from downed trees, there were no major injuries reported. On Monday afternoon, rain gauges at the N.C. Research Station on Sherrill’s Ford Road and at Second Creek in the Barber area recorded 1.42 inches and 1.35 inches of rain, respectively, in the previous 24 hours.
The county remained under a wind advisory into the afternoon.
