Did chickens stop laying eggs?

I just got back from my local Food Lion and they wanted $2.29 for a dozen of their brand of eggs. To me something just doesn’t add up.

The reason I say that is that last week they were only like $1.39. Needless to say, I will just go without my eggs in the morning.
