Three charged in assault of officers at jail

Three men being held in the Rowan County Detention Center were charged Thursday with assaulting two officers.
Joshua Marquis Byrd, 23, of 1008 Hawkinstown Road, Damarcus Antonio Richardson, 21, of 1026 Celebration Drive and Grover Franklin Jones Jr., 20, of 506 S. Yadkin Ave., Spencer, were each charged with assaulting a government employee and placed under $2,500 secured bonds, according to arrest reports.
Byrd is scheduled to appear in Rowan District Court on Feb. 24 while Richardson and Jones are scheduled to appear Feb. 26.
Byrd is charged with assaulting R.B. Davis of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office by hitting him in the shoulder, back and side with a closed fist and pushing him against a wall, the arrest report says. The assault occurred while Davis was attempting to place Byrd on lockdown status in the jail.
Richardson and Jones are both charged with assaulting Rowan County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Collins by hitting him in the face with a closed fist, according to the arrest reports. Collins was assaulted while trying to give the inmates uniforms and tissues.
