CONCORD ó Authorities say detention staff had no indication a Kannapolis man might harm himself before he committed suicide in the Cabarrus County jail.
Freddie Lee Hewett Jr., 25, of 1313 Washington Lane died Jan. 18 at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast.
Shortly after 1 p.m. on Jan. 18, detention staff found Hewett hanging from a bedsheet wrapped around his neck.
He was transported to CMC-NorthEast by Cabarrus EMS and pronounced dead at the hospital.
Cabarrus Chief Deputy Sheriff Paul Hunt said a staff member made the rounds and checked on Hewett 12 minutes before he was discovered.
Hunt said Hewett was in good shape when he came to the jail, and there was no reason to suspect he might try to hurt himself.
According to Kannapolis police, Hewett had been arrested for stealing property from the Wal-Mart at NorthLite Shopping Center.
Capt. Chuck Adams said Kannapolis police also had unserved warrants for Hewett for breaking into a home.
Services for Hewett were held Saturday in Southport.
