Salisbury linebacker Jalon Walker’s latest offer came from Georgia Tech.

Summer baseball

Carson graduate Owen White was named to the all-time team for the South Charlotte Panthers program.

White was 10-1 with the Panthers, with six saves. He had the fewest walks per game of any pitcher in Panthers history.

Fishing

North Stanly junior Carson Palmer was one of 12 anglers named to the Bassmaster High School All-America team.

Palmer has amassed an outstanding seven tournament wins over the past year. In addition to those seven wins, he has also earned four Top 5 finishes, as well as two Top 20 finishes. Because of his tournament success, Palmer has been ranked in the Top 10 college recruits on Top Tier Fishing.

Not only is Palmer an outstanding angler, but he also excels in the classroom. He serves as the vice president of his junior class. He also plays an instrumental role in his community by collecting items from other students and community members and taking them to cancer patients during their treatment period.

“I believe Palmer to be a student of high moral character and great work ethic,” said Anne Mauldin, English teacher and Student Council Advisor at North Stanly. “He has proven himself in and out of the classroom to be an asset to his peers and his teachers. He is eager to learn and his charismatic personality makes him a joy to be around.”

Awards

The  NCHSAA announced the selection of Steve Rankin from Lake Norman High School for the Association’s Bud Phillips Retiree Award. The award is designed to recognize individuals that have retired from full-time work in education and continue to be a valuable resource to the NCHSAA through various avenues of service.

The award is named for Bud Phillips who was a Guilford County native and was a long-time coach and athletic director at J.H. Rose High School. Phillips was the first high school athletic director in the state to earn athletic director certification through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and was inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame in 1992.

The NCHSAA announced the 2020 recipients of the Charlie Adams Endowed Scholarship, an award honoring the late and former executive director of the NCHSAA. Madeline Dierauf from Brevard High School and Peter Petroff from Concord High School are this year’s recipients of the $1,500 scholarship award.

Petroff was a two-sport athlete in football and wrestling each of four years with the Spiders. During his senior year, Petroff was the team captain for his varsity wrestling and football teams. In addition to being recognized for his leadership, Petroff has also received a number of honors including selection as a member of the All-Conference team for both wrestling and football. Petroff is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Science Honor Society. He is also an accomplished pianist and plans to double major in English and economics this fall.
