Staff report
The Rowan County Republican Executive Committee will hold a special meeting Saturday to nominate a replacement for Sheriff George Wilhelm.
Tony Yon, chairman of the Executive Committee, notified members of the committee by an e-mail asking them to attend the session at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Cohen Administrative Offices Building, 130 W. Innes St.
Under state law, the Rowan County Board of Commissioners has the authority to appoint a replacement.
Under state law, Chief Deputy Kevin Auten is the acting sheriff until a replacement is named. Wilhelm’s last day was Monday.
Commissioners are scheduled to meet Monday Dec. 7. Chairman Carl Ford said earlier this week that he doesn’t believe commissioners should rush.
Yon, who is known to be seeking the committee endorsement for sheriff, announced that Dan Barrett, current 5th District GOP Chairman, will conduct the special meeting Saturday.
