Library, Center for Emotional Health to have virtual talk on dealing with stress

On Monday at 6 p.m., Rowan Public Library will partner with the Center for Emotional Health on a virtual talk called “Healthy Mind, Healthy You: Dealing with stress during stressful times.”

A certified mental health counselor will discuss ways to stay happy and healthy and encourage participants to ask questions regarding their biggest concerns.

“CEH’s proximity and services make them a good fit for this program,” said Abigail Hardison, Rowan Public Library’s Adult Services supervisor. “So many people are feeling stress and anxiety about the state of the world right now, and that prolonged uncertainty and frustration can be detrimental to health and peace of mind. If we can find ways to connect people with information and resources that can help, then it’s important that we do that.”

The Center for Emotional Health is a local organization with offices all around the Charlotte metro area including Hickory, Gastonia, Mooresville, Statesville, Winston-Salem and Salisbury. It provides counseling for individuals, families and groups and specializes in treatment for depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD and other mental health issues. In addition to this free event with Rowan Public Library, the center has offered free virtual group therapy for those struggling with emotional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virtual programs like “Healthy Mind, Healthy You: Dealing with Stress during Stressful Times” allow RPL to continue to serve the community, providing an e-space where people come together, exchange ideas, and celebrate community.

“This program is a great opportunity for people to connect with the library and others,” Hardison said. “We may be more isolated physically right now, but the pandemic is a unique situation in which we are having similar feelings and frustrations. Knowing each of us is not alone in this can reassure and comfort.”

The virtual event, which will be held via Zoom, is free, and there are no age restrictions. For those who would rather not download Zoom, there is an option to dial in to the meeting for audio access only. To participate via Zoom or audio-only, email info@rowancountync.gov with your name, phone number, and email address by 3 p.m. on Monday, May 18. This information will only be shared with the Center for Emotional Health; their staff will send participants their information to log in to the Zoom meeting.

Potential participants can also call Rowan Public Library’s central line, 980-432-8670, to submit their registration information and/or to learn more about Zoom.
