When the Lord puts a burden on a man’s heart, the man is the first to respond. That principle holds true for Michael Taylor.

Almost three decades ago, this preacher knew that he prayed for law enforcement and other officials, but he deeply desired for others to get involved, and let the men and women who help care for their communities know that someone really cares about them.

Near 1990, a couple in Arlington, Texas, who had three sons in law enforcement, committed to pray for an officer every day for one year. That was the beginning of the original Shield-a-Badge Program. During his formative years of beginning a structured program in Rowan County and to involve every person he could, Taylor tried different approaches. He has made countless phone calls and visits to recruit partners in his adventure. The program is funded by personal and business donations.

And the work has proven to be quite effective. The familiar logo on much of his material, especially the free Bibles that he has given to thousands, is heart-warming to those who wear a badge and know the perils of the position. Chaplain Taylor designed the logo,and has used it on many objects.

Over the years, Taylor — a pastor, chaplain, volunteer, a praying man, a U.S. veteran and an honorary captain — has accompanied law enforcement officers to give fatal news to families, praying with them and giving them helpful materials. He has made personal visits to officers, taken them special gifts at Christmas, prayed individually with them, sent them cards and built lasting friendships. Taylor believes that communication is key. And his key continues to open new doors.

As a young man, Taylor says he knew that God had a purpose for his life. Through different events, he learned just how valuable life is and he wanted to make sure others knew. God saved him and called him to preach and gave him a heart for helping others. And he has followed his callings faithfully, even after suffering a stroke.

Now in the 25th anniversary year, Shield-a-Badge With Prayer has become a friend to many officers, volunteers and to the families of all who serve. Knowing that people care enough to pray and give is fortifying encouragement in any circumstance.

Officers who do their job and do it well deserve respect. As with every line of duty in the world, there are some who give the occupation a bad name. But for the majority, the average person has no clue of the dangers a worthy law enforcement person faces on a daily basis-even while off duty.

As Shield-a-Badge With Prayer in Rowan County, continues to show appreciation and pray for the ones who help make our lives safer, the program reaches out to other states also. Anyone who wishes to participate in this cause can help and experience the satisfaction of giving a little in return to those who sacrifice.

1 Timothy 2:1-3 says, “Exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.”
