SALISBURY – As the featured non-profit for Salisbury Academy’s online auction held the week of April 20, the Rowan County Literacy Council received $2,500 to be used without restriction toward their mission of improving the lives of adults, youth, and families by enhancing literacy and life skills.

“It’s an honor to partner with fellow educators as part of this year’s online auction, and we are thankful to support the Rowan County Literacy Council’s meaningful work, especially during these challenging times,” said Beverly Fowler, head of school for Salisbury Academy.

Although this year’s Salisbury Academy auction was forced to shift to an online format due to COVID-19, the fundraising for local causes and support of a featured non-profit continued thanks to the generosity of the community supporters, alumni, and members of the school community who participated in the event.

The funds received by the Rowan County Literacy Council will be put directly towards the RCLC summer program which they anticipate will be more important than ever given recent changes, executive director K.C. Scott shares.

“While our adult students and tutors have been able to utilize technology to keep going, our Youth Literacy Program that we have in partnership with Communities in Schools was cut short when schools closed,” Scott said.

The funds provided by the Salisbury Academy auction will support programs to keep these children on
track to graduation and in turn reduce poverty and crime in the community.

“There are so many wonderful nonprofits in our area, and our two-employee operation is so small that outreach and promotion can be challenging,” Scott said. “It’s difficult to find the right words to say what it means to have been selected as Salisbury Academy’s featured non-profit. We are so very thankful.”
