NCHSAA (coronavirus update)

The NCHSAA Board of Directors voted to extend the coronavirus dead period until June 15.

The dead period was originally scheduled to end June 1. The vote to extend the dead period until at least June 15 was unanimous.

Summer activities may begin on June 15. The NCHSAA’s intention is to move forward after June 15.  The NCHSAA is working on guidelines for members to follow. The NCHSAA plans to allow all sports to resume when the dead period ends. However, there will be quite a few restrictions and no contact will be allowed.

The NCHSAA would give schools a one-week notice on June 8 for the return to activity.

At this time, the NCHSAA is moving forward as if fall sports will begin on Aug. 1. However the NCHSAA is also working on contingency plans in case that can’t happen. Options might include shortening the regular season and reducing the number of teams in the playoffs.

Football, a fall sport, is critical to the financial structure of high school athletic programs.

“I don’t think there’s any question that football is very important in terms of the financial viability,” NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker said. “To not have any fans in the stands would be very tough.”

If football and other fall sports can’t begin on schedule with the traditional start of practice Aug. 1, Tucker said the NCHSAA will examine other options.

“Maybe that date is the middle of August or maybe it’s Sept. 1,” Tucker said. “Nothing is off the table.”

The NCHSAA is not, at this time, considering moving any sports seasons. There’s nothing in the NCHSAA  bylaws that would prevent the association from changing the sports seasons for the 2020-21 school year, but it would be “a last resort.”

“We’re not really entertaining that,” Tucker said.

The NCHSAA urges schools to use the next few weeks to stockpile sanitizer, cleaning supplies, gloves, masks and other supplies that may be needed to safely conduct athletics.

The NCHSAA suspended spring sports competition beginning March 14 and canceled the rest of spring sports on April 24.

There is no change as far as the realignment calendar. NCHSAA bylaws require realignment every four years, so it will be done this year.

NCHSAA: Courage Awards

CHAPEL HILL – The NCHSAA announced the recipients of the 2020 Tony Simeon Courage Awards.

The Tony Simeon Courage Awards are designed to honor individuals who, despite adversity, have demonstrated exemplary character and performance. As a result of their strength and character, these individuals have been an inspiration to all those involved in the programs of the NCHSAA. These awards are named in honor of NCHSAA hall of famer, Tony Simeon, a long-time coach at High Point Central and a pillar of the coaching community across the state.

This year’s recipients are Andrea Cornel from Broughton, Brandy Dills from Franklin, Samuel O’Grady from Sun Valley, and Casen Whitehead from Holly Springs.
