Case count grows by more than two dozen to surpass 700

SALISBURY — An additional 28 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday after 44 additional tests were reported, bringing the county’s total to 703 cases.
Additionally, after a double-digit decrease on Tuesday, the number is currently positive cases grew by 21 on Wednesday, totaling 263 currently positive cases. A total of 38 individuals have died, 402 have recovered and 14 are being hospitalized.
A total of 3,735 tests have been reported.
Of the 38 deaths, 21 have been from the Citadel, 15 at the N.C. State Veterans Home and two weren’t associated with a congregate care facility. The average age of the deaths is 83.
The total number of cases at congregate care facilities has remained unchanged at 210.
Statewide, 30,777 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 after 449,263 tests were completed. A total of 939 individuals have died, and 684 individuals are being hospitalized across the state.
The state has reported that COVID-19 trends and indicators remain relatively stable but show some warning signs that underscore the approach for Phase Three of Reopening.
Additionally, county officials in a press release that the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Economic and Family Services will be providing the maximum allotted amount of SNAP/FNS benefits for June, beginning on June 22. The amounts will be staggered and randomly generated every other work day until all eligible households have received their temporary increase.
In other COVID-19 statistics:
- The average age for positive individuals is 48.8. Individuals age 65 and older make up the plurality of cases, at 188, and the 51-64 age group is at 115 cases. However, ages 36-50 and 18-35 continue to climb — at 171 and 192 cases, respectively. A total of 37 cases are among children younger than 18 years old.
- Of the positive cases, 419 individuals are white, 127 are black or African American, three are Asian, one is American Indian/Alaskan Native, 186 are Hispanic, 107 are unknown and 46 are other.
- Females still make up the majority of positive cases, at 356, while males represent 347 of the positive cases.
- Zip code 28147, which is where the Citadel nursing home is located, remains the area of the county with the most positive cases, at 303. Next is 28144, a Salisbury zip code, with 186 cases. Zip code 28146, which includes part of Salisbury and a large swath of eastern Rowan, currently has 71 positive cases.
