Area Sports Briefs: Dorsetts win McCanless 4-Ball

Overall champions for the 56th annual Grady B. McCanless 4-Ball championship were brothers Michael and Keith Dorsett.
They won against Kevin Lentz and Shane Benfield in Sunday’s final.

In the TYGA Bojangles Junior Boys’ Open at Cutter Creek Golf Club in Snow Hill, Will Fowler (Salisbury) shot 76-83 — 159 and tied for 40th.

Salisbury native Michael Childress is entered in the 5th Carolinian Amateur at Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek on June 12-14.

Rowan Masters qualifying dates at Warrior are June 20/21.
NCHSAA
High schools in North Carolina will be allowed to resume athletics again on June 15, according to the NCHSAA, although some districts will wait.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Wake County schools announced they won’t resume prior to July 6, at the earliest.
The COVID-19 pandemic halted high school sports across the state. High school athletics have been shut down since March 13.
The dead period was originally scheduled to end June 1. At the end of May, the NCHSAA extended that dead period until June 15.
Monday’s announcement by NCHSAA also includes extensive guidelines and limitations and restrictions for returning to play.
Team travel is not permitted yet.
The NCHSAA identified baseball, softball, golf, swimming, tennis, cross country and track and field as sports where activity can be done with social distancing and no sharing of equipment.
Football and basketball will be more challenging. Other high risk sports identified by the NCHSAA are lacrosse, soccer, wrestling, volleyball and cheerleading.
FOOTBALL
Wearing protective equipment still prohibited. Conditioning and individual drills would be in play.
BASEBALL and SOFTBALL
Conditioning and “Tee” or pitching machine permitted.
BASKETBALL
Conditioning, individual basketball skill drills, but no contact or sharing of balls. A player may practice shooting and must retrieve own ball. A player must not participate in drills with a single ball that will be handed off or passed to other teammates.
TENNIS
Conditioning. No sharing of balls.
TRACK AND FIELD
Runners must maintain at least 6 feet of distancing between individuals.
SOCCER
Conditioning, individual ball skill drills. Feet only.
VOLLEYBALL
Conditioning, individual ball handling drills, each player has own ball.
WRESTLING
Conditioning. Wrestlers may skill and drill, without touching a teammate.
CROSS COUNTRY
Runners must maintain at least 6 feet of distancing between individuals.
GOLF
Maintain appropriate physical distancing of at least 6 feet.
SWIMMING
Maintain appropriate physical distancing of at least 6 feet at all times.
CHEERLEADING
Conditioning and individual technique work. No group stunts.
NCHSAA Male Athlete of the Year
Jefferson Boaz – East Surry
Boaz led the East Surry Cardinals to the school’s first state Championship in spectacular fashion, defeating Tarboro 56-28. Boaz completed 33 of 42 passes for 478 yards and seven touchdowns in the game and was selected as the 1AA MVPr. For the season, the quarterback threw for 4,615 yard and 65 touchdowns. Boaz was selected for the 2019 Shrine Bowl, NC Preps All-State, Associated Press NC Offensive Player of the Year and the 2019 Small School All-American Football Second Team.
Boaz led the Cardinals basketball team to an 18-7 record, averaging 23.9 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per contest.
Boaz had started the baseball season 2-0 as a pitcher without allowing an earned run while striking out 13 in just eight innings of work.
He is committed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to continue his football and academic career.
Fishing
Boater Jason Thomas, of Lexington, earned the win Saturday in the Phoenix Bass Fishing League event at High Rock Lake.
He brought in a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 10 ounces and earned $11,794.
Doug Young, of Salisbury was second among the boaters with four bass weighing 16 pounds, 11 ounces. He won $1,897.

In the co-angler division, Salisbury’s Tom File won with three bass, weighing 10 pounds, 6 ounces. He won $1,897.
David Miller, of China Grove, was 10th in the co-angler division, with two bass, weighing 7 pounds, 9 ounces and won $221.
