SALISBURY — The Wallace Cancer Institute project is close to completion and will open in August for patient care.

The Hurley Healing Garden is intended to be a peaceful and relaxing retreat for patients, families and teammates. The garden will contain benches, rocking chairs, shaded eating spaces, a pergola, butterfly bushes, flower beds, trees, shrubs and a water feature. Stone pavers, engraved to commemorate a loved one, a caregiver or special occasion will be installed along the garden pathways.

Cheerwine to reward people creating cheer throughout the summer

SALISBURY —Cheerwine is thanking people for “creating cheer” this summer on social media with 11 weeks of uniquely southern prizes.

From now until August 23, entrants in the “Uniquely Southern Summer Contest” can win a summer supply of Cheerwine, Cheerwine merchandise and summer staples and essentials. Deadline for next year’s class of Leadership Rowan is June 19

SALISBURY — The Rowan Chamber’s deadline for the 2020-21 Leadership Rowan Class is Friday, June 19.

Leadership Rowan is a transformational experience for both the participants and the organizations they serve. Class members commit one day a month to exploring the community and discovering what makes it distinctive, including government, education, business, human needs and the arts.

Many leaders from all fields apply each year for the nine-month experience, and only 30 are selected to build a class representative of the community. The class will begin in August and conclude in May 2021.

Food Lion opens new Morganton store

SALISBURY — Neighbors in Morganton now have a new Food Lion location to help nourish their families.

Food Lion’s newest location, at 1555 E. Union St., Morganton, is open to customers daily from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m.

“Morganton is my hometown. I grew up here, went to school here and have spent the past 14 years serving this community, most recently as the manager of the Food Lion store previously located across the street,” said Tim Powell, store manager of the new location. “I’m so excited to open this brand new store right here in my neighborhood. I look forward to welcoming our neighbors into the new location and for them to see the exciting updates we’ve made with them in mind in their new Morganton Food Lion.”

Earlier this week, Powell and other local Food Lion associates delivered more than 200 gift bags to express their appreciation to police officers and staff at the Morganton Public Safety building, firefighters at Morganton Fire Station #1 and emergency room physicians and medical staff at Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge Morganton, according to a press release.

In another commitment to the Morganton community, through Food Lion Feeds, the retailer’s hunger relief platform, $5,000 will be donated to The Outreach Center to help fight senior hunger. The Outreach Center serves a variety of seniors each with different needs and challenges from veterans to the disabled or ones currently undergoing cancer treatments.
