Area sports briefs: Offers for White; Helms aces par-4; Rowan announces roster

High school basketball
Recruiting interest intensified for North Rowan’s 6-foot-10 Brandon White (Class of 2022) on Monday with a wave of phone calls from college coaches.

He was offered by Wake Forest, Houston, Ole Miss, Charlotte, East Carolina and South Florida on Monday. A number of other major programs contacted White to express interest.

White’s first two offers came from Virginia Tech and Western Kentucky in March.

Local golf
Russell Helms made a hole-in-one on Sunday at McCanless on the par-4 No. 16 hole from 295 yards.
He used a persimmon 1-wood.
Chris Hutcheson witnessed the feat.

Mike Herring made a hole-in one on the 150-yard No. 3 hole at McCanless with an 8-iron.
He was playing with his son, Daniel Herring.

Michael Childress shot 75-74-71 —220 in the 5th Carolinian Amateur in Buies Creek and tied for 19th.

Childress, Nick Lyerly and Walker Cress are competing in the 60th North Carolina Amateur.
The tournament will be held June 18-21 at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.
Lyerly won the 72-hole tournament in 2016 when he was 17 and a rising senior at East Rowan.
Summer baseball
Rowan County’s roster for the NC3 baseball league includes Caden Hudson, Logan Rogers, Richard Prange, Dylan Driver, TJ Jones, Cole Hales, CP Pyle, Jake Harris, Zeb Burns, Ryan Street, Chase Shoaf, Jonathan Spry, Kaleb Burleyson, Jordan Goodine, Charlie Klingler, Bryson Wagner, Wayne Mize, Mattox Henderson, Casey Gouge, Andrew Kennerly, JT Fecteau, Scout Nichols and Daniel Sell.
Hales (Coker), Nichols (Erskine) and Wagner (Wake Tech) were on college rosters this season, The rest are from Rowan high schools.
Klingler is headed to High Point. Goodine, Burns and Street are Catawba signees. Rogers, Spry, Mize and Sell have signed with junior colleges.
Rowan is scheduled to start the season at home on June 20.
Fishing

It was a doubleheader for bass anglers in Salisbury with the Phoenix Bass Fishing League in action at High Rock Lake.

Brian Morgan of Sherrills Ford, was the top boater on Saturday, taking five bass weighing 22 pounds. He won $5,511.

Morgan had the biggest fish — 6 pounds, 3 ounces.

Salisbury’s Doug Young placed third (5 bass, 16 pounds) and won $1,595. Salisbury’s Lucas Hedrick was fourth (5 bass, 15 pounds, 15 ounces) and won $1,119.

Brad Hendrix led the co-anglers on Saturday with five bass, weighing 19 pounds, 5 ounces, and won $2,381.

Salisbury’s Doug File placed fifth with four bass, weighing 9 pounds, 3 ounces. He won $476.

New London’s Kevin Chandler was the top boater on Sunday, with five bass, weighing 19 pounds, 3 ounces. He won $4,359.

Salisbury’s Rodney Bell took second with five bass, weighing 17 pounds, 15 ounces. He won $2,179.

Mooresville’s David Cooke caught the biggest bass — 6 pounds, 3 ounces.

Leading the co-anglers on Sunday was Greg Robertson of King. He had four bass, weighing 11 pounds, 15 ounces, and won $2,179.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the North Carolina Division, based on point standings, along with the five winners of each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 8-10 Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on the James River in Richmond, Va.
