Letter: Tear gas is appropriate sometimes

I read that the Salisbury City Council may consider banning the use by police of chemical agents such as tear gas.

If protests remain peaceful, there is no need for tear gas. But when a protest turns violent, when demonstrators become a mob chasing an innocent person through the streets and when private and public property is being destroyed, then in my opinion a non-lethal control method such as tear gas is appropriate.
