Peter Fountain, who will be a freshman at UNC, won the 60th North Carolina Amateur Championship on Sunday in a playoff at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.

Fountain made a move with a third-round 64 and finished at 9-under 271, along with UNC Greensboro graduate Jonathan Brightwell. Fountain won on the first playoff hole with a par.

Concord’s Walker Cress, a rising senior at James Madison, led the tournament the first three rounds. He shot 2-over 72 on Sunday and finished in a tie for third.

Also in the tie for third at 6-under 274 was Nick Lyerly, an East Rowan graduate and a rising senior at UNC Greensboro. Lyerly, who won the NC Amateur in 2016, made four birdies and three bogeys during his 1-under 69 on Sunday.

Salisbury native Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot 77-70-70-74 and finished at 11-over 291. He tied for 38th.
