East Rowan won 11-5 against West Rowan in NC3 Junior action on Wednesday at Faith Jaycee Ballpark.

Chance Mako doubled, tripled and knocked in four runs to lead East’s 11-hit attack, along with Blake Hill who had three hits.

Austin Fulk got the win. Dylan Valley started on the bump and threw three scoreless innings.

East lost 6-0 in its opener against Western Forsyth Blue on Tuesday.

Cobb Hightower had two hits for East. Fulk, Hill and Jaxon Trexler also had hits. Nate Hayworth struck out four in a relief role.

 

Local golf

Salisbury’s Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot even-par 72 in Wednesday’s first round of the Golfweek Myrtle Beach Collegiate. Childress made three birdies and three bogeys.

Salisbury’s Charlie Barr (Cannon School) needed a birdie on No. 18 to qualify for match play, but he won his first two matches on Wednesday. The Round of 16 and the quarterfinal matches will be played today.

Hank Robins (Salisbury) also qualified for match play but dropped his first match.

Barr has qualified for two more major tournaments — the Carolinas Amateur Championship in Wilmington (July 9-12) and the N.C. Amateur Match-Play Championship in Holly Springs (July 29-Aug.2).

 

Catawba athletics

Catawba senior Hannah Mercer and junior Tom Joyce have been named to the 2019-20 Academic All-America® Division II Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country teams.

Both Mercer and Joyce were third team honorees, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Mercer achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA during her four years, majoring in therapeutic recreation. She was a three-time All-SAC performer in cross country and twice earned all-region honors. Over her career, Mercer claimed four individual wins and set a school mark for a 6k.

Joyce boasts a 3.97 GPA as he majors in biology and environmental sustainability. He came to Catawba as a men’s soccer player, but transitioned to cross county and track as a sophomore. He has medaled three times in the distance medley relay at the SAC Indoor Championships which included a first place finish this season. He holds school records indoors at 800 and 1000 meters and outdoors at 800 and 1500 meters.
