Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 68-69 in stroke-play qualifying in the North & South Men’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst.

He tied for ninth. He’s seeded 12th for match play this morning.

On Sunday, the McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice.

The team of Bev & Ty Cobb and Ralph & Pam Carver took first place.

Bev Cobb chipped in for a birdie on No. 1. Pam Carver made a 30-foot putt for a birdie on No. 9.

The other birdies were just routine.

The second-place team was Calvin Smith, Susan Wydner and Azalee  & David Huneycutt.

Harry Owen was closest to the pin, while Larry Clifton had the longest putt.

 

NC3 baseball

SALISBURY — Rowan County’s NC3 baseball team routed Mount Airy twice in non-league games on Tuesday.

Rowan rolled 15-0 and 11-1. Both games employed the 10-run-rule by mutual consent.

Rowan (7-1) has added a game to the schedule and will host Greensboro tonight at Newman Park.

In the first game, Logan Rogers and Ryan Street combined for a no-hitter and seven strikeouts. Rogers walked two and struck out four in his three innings. Street had no walks and three strikeouts in two innings.

Cole Hales had a triple, double and a single before the second inning was in the books. He scored two and drove in three. Charlie Klingler had two hits and scored twice. Casey Gouge went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Jordan Goodine continued his hot hitting with two doubles and two RBIs and added a diving catch. Zeb Burns got on base three straight times out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup and scored each time.

Rowan settled it with a wild, 10-run second inning, sending 15 men to the plate. Gouge and Hales both had two hits in that inning.

Jonathan Spry, Scout Nichols and Chase Shoaf combined to hold the visitors to an unearned run on six hits in the nightcap.

Rowan scored four runs in the fifth inning, with Rogers’ two-run double being the key blow.

Caden Hudson’s booming hit with two outs in the sixth plated Burns with the run that gave Rowan a 10-run cushion.

In NC3 Junior action on Tuesday, West Rowan beat East Rowan, 6-1.

Drew Park, Matthew Connolly and JD James had two hits each for West.

Park, Lucas Graham and Ian Bingham did the pitching for West.

Jacob Causey pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings for East. Tristan Miller had two hits. His RBI double drove in Dylan Valley with East’s run.

In NC3 Junior action Wednesday, Austin Fulk, Cobb Hightower, Blake Hill and Nate Hayworth had two hits apiece to lead East Rowan’s 13-hit attack in a 12-5 win against Mocksville. Braden Shive got the win in relief.

 

 SAC  athletics

Limestone University joined the South Atlantic Conference as a full member on Wednesday.

The addition of Limestone increases the number of SAC members to 13 institutions. Limestone has been an associate member in football-only since 2016.

Limestone, located in Gaffney, S.C., is a four-year private liberal arts college offering 57 undergraduate academic majors and 23 minors and concentrations.

Limestone will compete in all 20 of the SAC’s championship sports, including its two combined championships with Conference Carolinas, field hockey and wrestling.

 

Independent baseball

Former Catawba stars Zac Almond and Chris Dula are among the players hoping to make the roster of the Sugar Land Skeeters in the Constellation Energy League in Texas.

 

Catawba awards
The Wurster awards for sportsmanship, character and leadership for the 2019-20 school year went to Peyton Pruitt of the women’s soccer team and Jared Richard of the men’s lacrosse team.

 

Showcase baseball

   South Rowan’s Nathan Chrismon had two good games for the South Charlotte Panthers 2022 squad over the weekend. He had three runs and two hits vs. Knights Baseball and two hits and a run scored vs. Bo Jackson Baseball.

East Rowan hurlers have been impressive for the South Charlotte Panthers organization. JD Basinger struck out 10 (no walks) in 4 1/3 innings for the   2021 squad, while Jake Hunter struck out 8 in 3 1/3 innings.

Chance Mako struck out three in one innings for the SC Panthers 2023 team.

West Rowan’s Steven Smith, who is in the Class of 2021, finished off a no-hitter for his Canes Central 17U team over the weekend. Smith struck out three in two innings.
