Catawba’s women’s basketball team got another big SAC road win on Tuesday, surprising Newberry 62-50 with a strong second half.
Catawba (4-1, 3-0) trailed most of the first half but surged late in the half to tie 29-all at the break.
Zhaquondalee Greer started the second half with a 3-pointer, and Catawba led the rest of the way.
On a night when leading scorer Chloe Bully shot 3-for-17 and Atonionette McPhail was held to three points, the Indians still were able to win because Mallary Clay had 16 points and Greer scored 14.
Catawba shot only 37.1 percent, but it forced 22 turnovers while committing 11.
Haylee Lepaio scored 18 for the Wolves (3-2, 1-2).

Catawba’s men’s basketball team lost 99-86 at undefeated Newberry on Tuesday.
Kijaun Arrington had 24 points for the Indians, and Reggie Perkins scored 23, but Catawba (1-5, 1-2) couldn’t overcome 15 missed free throws and 26 turnovers.
Tyrece Little had nine rebounds for the Indians.
Dondray Walker scored 27 for Newberry (5-0, 3-0), and Cole Birchfield had 18.
The game was tied at 62-all wth 12:54 remaining, and it was still a one-possession game with 8:36 left, but the Wolves pulled away.

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost to Claflin 69-64 at New Trent Gym on Tuesday.
Tiffany Evans and Ashley Walker scored 15 points each for the Blue Bears (3-4).
Evans had a hot streak that pushed Livingstone to a 58-54 lead with 4:40 remaining, but Claflin finished stronger.
Livingstone had a big edge on the boards but couldn’t overcome 33.8-percent shooting and a 2-for-16 effort on 3-pointers.
Jaquanna Davis scored 18 for the visitors from Orangeburg, S.C. Claflin is 4-2.

Pfeiffer’s men lost 85-81 to Bluefield State at Merner Gym on Monday. Mike Smith scored 22 for Pfeiffer, while Al Clark had 21.

• K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 25 points for Augusta in 72-70 overtime loss to Benedict on Tuesday.

• West Rowan’s girls lost to Mooresville 36-31.
Taziah Hardin had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, and Parker Greene had six points, 10 rebounds and nine steals. Niaja Wilson scored six points, and Morgan Corriher had five.
• China Grove won 26-23 against Corriher-Lipe.
Riley Corriher scored 11 points for the Red Devils, and Anne Marie Turney had nine.
For Corriher-Lipe, Hannah Voder had 8 points, and Taylor Wiggins scored six.

West Rowan Middle’s boys won 46-44 against Mooresville to improve to 4-0.
Caleb Mauldin had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Bulldogs. Owen White had nine points and six steals. Cole Myers scored eight points.
Treye Gunnings had 20 for the Red Imps.
West plays Southeast on Monday.
• Corriher-Lipe’s boys won 48-32 against China Grove. Isaiah Wade scored 13 points to lead the Yellow Jackets, and Connor Childers had nine.

Taylor Whitley (Carson) finished her career at Guilford with a school-record 2,837 assists and ranks fourth in career aces with 126.
Whitley had 750 assists and 40 aces as a senior.
Whitley has served as treasurer of Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She will graduate with a degree in forensic accounting and health sciences this spring.
• Host Fayetteville State beat Winston-Salem State 3-1 to win the CIAA tournament and qualified for the D-II national tournament.
• Wingate will host the Southeast Regional. Anderson, Tusculum, Queens and Newberry also are in the eight-team bracket.

Catawba’s men’s swim team team finished in seventh place, while the women finished eighth at the Wingate Fall Frenzy that concluded Sunday night. Wingate University hosted the three day event at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Twelve teams participated in the women’s division while 11 teams participated for the men.
The GARS staged a Member-Member Tournament at Crescent, with 32 participating.
In the First Flight, Mike Harrigan and Andy Winders shot 63 to win gross. Don Bishop and Dave Wilson shot 68.
Danny Crosby and Bobby Clark shot 64 to win the net division. Larry Fowler and Jay Boyce shot 67.
In the Second Flight, David Schenk and Ben Moore shot 73 to win gross. Frank Rowell and Mick Rowell shot 75.
Doug Lingle and Ross Howard shot 70 to win the net division. John Cress-Jan Kichefski and Frank Masingto-Ed Lockhart shot 73s.

The Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan Branch, is registering players for a boys basketball league that has weekday games and practices.
This league teaches basketball skills and fundamentals along with YMCA core values.
The league is for grades 2-8 (ages 7 to 14).
Registration is through Dec. 21. Practice begins Jan. 6. The season begins Jan. 20.

Justin LaDuke is the Allison Legacy Racing Series champion for 2013.
He won 10 races and six poles.
LaDuke began driving Go Karts at the age of 8 with much success, moved on to Mini Cup, and then joined the ALRS in 2010.
He had wins at Hickory Motor Speedway, Orange County Speedway, Motormile, Dillon Motor Speedway and Southern National.
He has been a hard charger and fierce competitor.
The Rocky Mount native also received the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship to UNC.
LaDuke would like to work in the motorsports industry as an engineer or crew chief.
