First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury hosts a celebration of the first Sunday of Advent Sunday, serving Holy Communion at all three worship services.
Sanctuary services will be held at 8:30 and 11 a.m. The Bell Tower Ringers will help lead worship and music.
The Contemporary service in Lewis Hall will be held at 8:50 a.m. and will feature a special hymn by Catawba Scholars.
There will be food, fellowship, and fun activities to celebrate “Countdown to Christmas” at 10 a.m. in Lewis Hall.
The Blessing of God Ministry will be celebrating the 14th pastoral anniversary of Chief Apostle Vanessa Taplah at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Chief Apostle Dorothy Wright of Petersburg, Va. will be the guest speaker.

CHINA GROVE — The Rev. Michael Baldonado will be the guest speaker during the 11 a.m. service Sunday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ, 1415 South Main St.
Baldonado grew up in the Philippines and now serves within the United Church of Christ.
Those present will be invited to share in a special offering on behalf of those in the Philippines suffering from Typhoon Haiyan.
On the First Sunday of Advent, the Jimmy Corriher family will be lighting the candle of Hope.

KANNAPOLIS/CONCORD — The Piedmont Singing Men will be present a free Christmas/Gospel concert at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Methodist Church, 416 First St.
The group will also be in concert at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at New Gilead Reformed Church on Old Salisbury Concord Road, Concord.
First United Methodist Church of Salisbury will have a Service for the Healing a Broken Spirit at 5 p.m. Sunday.
With the understanding that the Christmas Season can be a difficult time for those who are experiencing loss, conflict or pain of any kind in their life, First Methodist will offer a worship service that is designed to help people confront those struggles and release them through the healing power of God.
This service is open to everyone in the community to come and support of each other in the quest to find healing and wholeness in the face of adversity.
In this season when we celebrate the birth of Christ, it is good to remember that he came to heal the broken hearted.

The Missionaries of United Baptist Church of Kannapolis will host its annual Candlelight Service at 6 p.m. Sunday.
The purpose of the service is to raise money to assist area families in need during the holiday season.
The UBC Mass Choir will render several selections and the program also will include songs from another special group.

UCF will host an Affordable Care Act health seminar at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.
The event will include information about the law and the health insurance marketplace.
Presenters are trained bilingual navigators from Legal Services of Southern Piedmont.

STATESVILLE — Horizon Church will host its inaugural Significant Praise, an indoor Christian music festival featuring music, dance and special guest speakers from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec.7.
There will be a kids area, food and craft vendors. Santa Clause will make a pre-Christmas appearance.
This community outreach event, fundraiser and toy drive will be held at Horizon Church, 316 Signal Hill Drive.
Admission is $5, or free with a new, unwrapped toy donation.
The Carolina Catholic Chorale will sing its first Mass, “Feast of the Immaculate Conception,” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 at Sacred Heart Church.
This will be a Latin Mass in the extraordinary form, the ordinary being the “Missa Brevis in D major” of Mozart for chamber choir and orchestra.
The Gregorian chants of the day will be sung as well as Mozart’s beloved motet: “Ave Verum Corpus.”
The church hopes this will be the first of a growing number of such beautiful “orchestral” Masses with the next one sung during Eastertide 2014.
Founded in 2013 and serving the diocese of the Charlotte and its immediate area, The Carolina Catholic Chorale is dedicated to performing music chiefly of the Roman Catholic tradition in primarily liturgical settings.
Although the choir welcomes all lovers of sacred music, it enjoys a special mission to Catholic musicians in acquainting them with the great, ongoing choral and instrumental tradition that is their heritage.

Ashleigh’s Angels will host a Gospel Singing and Chicken ‘n Dumplings from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday Dec. 14 at Southside Baptist Church, 500 Morlan Park Road/
Ashleigh’s Angels raises money to help parents of kids going through brain cancer, in memory of 3-year-old Ashleigh Jade Higgins.
Dinner will be served from 2 to 7 p.m.
The Dosses, The Gospelairs, The Enlighteners will perform from 4 to 8 p.m.
The cost is $5 for children ages 4-12 and $8 for adults. Children ages 3 and younger will be admitted free. Carryout is $7.
Remnant in Christ Outreach will host a One Warm Coat event at 627 Newsome Road on Saturday, Dec. 21.
The church is accepting coats and will continue to collect up until the day before. The goal is to distribute a minimum of 100 coats.
In addition, the church will prepare a chili lunch with bread and drinks.
The current drop-off location for coats is at A Step Into Excellence Boutique, 1008 S. Main St. in Salisbury.
Also accepted: hats, gloves, scarves, socks, sweatshirts, and anything to contribute to sharing the warmth to someone in need.
The church would also like to enlist volunteer church ensembles or soloists to sing during the event.
