RALEIGH (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory says he wants to roll out a North Carolina public school teacher pay proposal early in 2014 but isn’t talking specifics as his top education adviser, teachers and other groups make suggestions on salaries and other policies.
McCrory told reporters after Tuesday’s Council of State meeting the first step is making sure there’s enough money for pay increases. State Budget Director Art Pope told council members the budget remains balanced so far this fiscal year.
The governor said previously options being considered include front-loading pay raises early in teachers’ careers, across-the-board raises and improved pay for classroom performance or teaching in certain fields. Legislators returning to work in May would have to approve any changes.
Teachers have received one annual raise in the past five years.
