School groups, friends, family and community members have scheduled the first Cavaliers 5K Run/Walk for a Cure as a fundraiser to offset bills for Kim Smith, who grew up just two blocks from North Rowan High School and later attended the school before taking a job as the school’s secretary. While maintaining that position for 25 years, she touched many lives. Now, she is battling pancreatic cancer and her medical bills are mounting.
The event Saturday, Nov. 23, is the brainchild of Debbie Sousa, health science educator at North Rowan. Smith’s classmate at North started the ball rolling and other organizations jumped in to help organize the event. Others involved are the Health Sciences II classes, NRHS HOSA, Junior Civitans, student government, Key Club, YCI and ROTC.
Cloninger Ford is title sponsor and all proceeds will be split between Smith’s medical bills and Relay for Life to help fund cancer research to find a cure.
The 5K will start at 10 a.m., and awards will be given in 12 age groups. Each pre-registered participant will receive a long sleeve dri-fit T-shirt. Children will have fun and games to keep them occupied while their parents run. A tot trot and fun run will be held after the 5K. Refreshments will be served.
Smith’s husband, Bob, and son, Kelly are supporting her along with grandchildren Landon and Annabelle Smith.
Raffles will be held during the morning for a Cavalier corn hole board, a snowman wreath, a Christmas wreath, a pork shoulder and other items.
