The 117th Annual N.C. United Daughters of the Confederacy Division Convention held Oct. 2-5 in Durham was hosted by chapters in District III.
The district is comprised of chapters in Salisbury, Concord, Albemarle, Mooresville, Statesville and Winston-Salem.
Salisbury’s Robert F. Hoke Chapter President Sue Curtis served as convention chairman and Hoke members Chris Hilton, Barbara Upright, Trudy Hall, Nancy Sloop, Linda Davis, Diane Hall and Mary Hines participated during the convention.
The district won an award for its patriotic work, and the Hoke Chapter received six awards for historical, educational and patriotic work.
Speakers included archaeologist Ken Robinson of Wake Forest University, Dr. Gary Freeze of Catawba College and Tiffianna Honsinger, N.C. State Capitol historian.Friday’s Historical Evening featured an Honor Guard of past recipients of UDC military medals that included local residents Ed Curtis and Ed Davis.
Among the eight veterans who received medals that evening were three recommended by the Hoke Chapter: Norris Dearmon of Kannapolis who received a WWII Cross of Military Service Medal; Tom Hines of Raleigh, who received a Vietnam Conflict Cross of Military Service Medal; and Galen Harrison of Kernersville, who received an Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal.
