MOCKSVILLE — Broadway’s Best Theatre Company is celebrating halloween with a special holiday musical revue. “Broadway Tricks and Treats” will feature music from Broadway shows that represent the many facets of Halloween, such as “Little Shop Of Horrors,” “Wicked,” “Into The Woods” and “Damn Yankees.” There are also songs of murder and mayhem, from “Sweeney Todd,” “Jeckyll & Hyde” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins,” and hilarious music from shows including “Young Frankenstein,” “The Addams Family” and ‘Spamalot.”
“Broadway Tricks and Treats” will run two weekends, Oct. 18-20 and 24-27. Thursday evening’s performance starts at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30, Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 26 there is an additional 2 p.m. matinee. The Band of Opportunity is a group of low-maintenance, good-time-loving, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriters that combine guitars (acoustic and electric), mandolin, upright bass, harmonicas, suitcase drum-kit, and kazoos. Together, the group has shared shows with Taj Mahal, Sarah Jarosz and Sam Bush. The group played at Cooper’s and The Earth Day Jam in April. and is returning to Cooper’s this Saturday, Oct. 19 at 9 p.m.

Rowan Public Library and Rowan Blues and Jazz Society present the Jackie Torrence Tribute Storytelling Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Salisbury Post Parking lot (across from the Rowan Public Library). The festival will feature a tribute to Jackie Torrence from the NC Black Storytellers Association, and an inspiring presentation by Logan Mauldin, 10-year old author of “Step Up Your Game to Win the Game.”

The Margaret C. Woodson Planetarium will show “Fright Light” on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 5 and 7 p.m. The laser show is an “intense and exciting experience of laser light,” a Halloween-themed entertainment with images set to popular music by artists such as Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Charlie Daniels Band, Oingo Boingo, Alice Cooper and others. Viewer discretion advised: some images and lyrics may be inappropriate for young viewers. Audiences are encouraged to wear tasteful costumes to enhance the experience.

Dust off the camera, lace up your walking shoes, and join the second annual Fall Photowalk. Rowan Public Library invites aspiring photographers of all ages and skill levels to participate. A photowalk is an opportunity for a group of people to go on a walk with the express purpose of taking photos together. Our photowalks will include fall colors, historic landmarks, wildlife, and more. Staff will assist with questions about camera settings, angles, lighting, etc.
Bring at least one camera per family. Be sure to charge your batteries beforehand and wear comfortable shoes and clothing for the walk. The event will be held rain or shine. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be free prizes at each location. Top picks will be included in a traveling photo exhibit at each location.

Piedmont Players Theatre auditions for the Tony Award winning comedy “The 39 Steps” will be held Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 28-29 at 7 p.m. on the third floor of the Meroney Theater, 213 S. Main St. The play, adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock, calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film to be performed with a cast of only four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress (or sometimes actor) plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors play every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. A reception for the exhibition of student artwork of the Hispanic Heritage Month Art Contest will be held this evening, Thursday, Oct. 17 from 5-6:30 p.m. at Waterworks Visual Arts Center.
Rowan County students in grades 6-12 were invited by the Human Relations Council and Hispanic Coalition Committee to participate. Susan and Larry find themselves as guests enticed to the Victorian era mansion by its dissolute caretakers. Struck by Susan’s strong resemblance to Veronica Brabissant, long-dead daughter of the family for whom they work, the older couple gradually induce her to impersonate Veronica briefly to solace the only living Brabissant, her addled sister who believes Veronica alive. Soon Susan finds herself locked in the role or is she Veronica, in 1935, pretending to be an imaginary Susan.
This opening is 40 years to the day on the Anniversary of “Veronica’s Room” opening on Broadway. Rated PG-13, it contains adult themes and adult language.

Fans of the legendary rock group Pink Floyd will get a rare glimpse of the Dark Side of the Moon when the Catawba College All Stars perform all of the monumental album live. in the Hedrick Little Theatre this Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. as part of the college’s Homecoming Weekend.
Free and open to the public, the Pink Floyd tribute will include “Great Gig in the Sky” and “Money,” as well as “Eclipse” and “Brain Damage.”
The Vernaculars All Stars are Catawba’s flagship popular music ensemble. They appeared earlier this year at the inaugural ball for Governor Pat McCrory and performed the Beatles’ Abbey Road album live at the Hard Rock Cafe Times Square in New York. The Summer ARTtventures Volunteer Window exhibition will showcase original 2-D and 3-D artwork including, photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, and mixed media by our talented Summer 2013 ARTventures Volunteers. Artwork will be on exhibit from October 15-December 15, 2013 in the Waterworks windows on Liberty Street. This summer, our volunteers contributed a total of over 983 hours of service to our educational programming. Volunteers assist with every aspect of our summer program, from working directly with students, to preparing art materials. We also offer a number of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. CLEVELAND — Lake Norman Delta Waterfowl (www.lakenormandeltawaterfowl.org), your local chapter of the 100+ year old national Delta Waterfowl Foundation (www.deltawaterfowl.org), announced today its 2nd annual Youth Day. This event, limited to the first 100 children aged 5 – 15 that pre-register, will be held at S&S Outdoors, 4410 Amity Hill Rd., Cleveland NC 27013 from 9 AM – 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013.
The event will introduce children to conservation and ethical, safe hunting practices. It will include hands on activities such as building wood duck nesting boxes, archery and BB gun ranges and skeet shooting for older children (with NRA certified instructors). It will also feature live demonstrations of dog retrieving and falconry. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served for lunch and all of the participating children will receive a hat, t-shirt, duck call and a one year Youth Membership to Delta Waterfowl. There is no charge for the attendees (both children and parents) as this event is financed wholly by proceeds raised at the annual Lake Norman Delta Waterfowl “For the Ducks” Banquet [next banquet is February 8, 2014] and donations from local businesses.
Children must be preregistered. Parents may pre-register their children for this event by e-mailing info@lakenormandeltawaterfowl.org and providing the child’s name, age, t-shirt size and the parent/guardian’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Space is limited to the 100 children and their accompanying parent or guardian. An e-mail confirmation will be sent to all participants one to two weeks prior to the event.
