Flores’ hat trick leads Cougars

Carson won 3-1 against first-place Concord, and the Cougars are in position to win the SPC championship.
Brandon Flores scored all three Carson goals and has 28 for the season.
Khalid Myers had two assists. Colton Correll had one.
Keeper Grayson Owens, Garrett Owens, Fidel Flores and Aaron Lippard controlled the game defensively.
Ivan Hernandez and Sam Cooley helped the Cougars on the attack.
Carson (10-3), Concord (10-3-1) and Cox Mill (9-3-2) all have three losses.
Carson has three games left. The Cougars take on Central Cabarrus in makeup game on Monday.
• Carson’s jayvees lost 2-1 to Concord. Braxton Rogers scored for the Cougars.
South 2, C. Cabarrus 1
South Rowan won 2-1 against SPC foe Central Cabarrus on Thursday.
Javier Saucedo and Luis Fierro scored goals.
Tyler Livengood and Angel Dominguez had assists.
Hunter Altman, Dalton Carter, Alex Hopkins, Jose Sanchez and keeper Tony Ramirez played wel for the Raiders.
• East Rowan-West Rowan was postponed due to the tragedy at West.
Playoff pairings were announced for Saturday’s first round.
In 2A, Salisbury (10-10) is playing at West Stokes (12-7) at noon, so the Hornets will be on the road early. North Rowan (11-9) is at West Stanly (14-7) in a matchup of No. 2 seeds.
Admission for the Salisbury game is $6. Only state passes will be honored.

In 3A, Carson (29-0) will be at home against North Lincoln (14-10).
• In the South’s 25-15, 24-26, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-10 win against East Rowan, Lynsey Corriher had 10 kills, nine aces and seven digs.
Caroline Hubbard and Avry Locklear had nine kills each, and Kady Samples had six.
Kylie Labbe led South in digs with 15. Hubbard had nine, and Abby Fields had eight.
South finished 11-14 overall and 7-9 in the SPC.
• South’s jayvees swept to finish 20-5 overall and 13-3 in league play.
• In West Rowan’s 3-0 loss to Concord, Mikayla Graham had three aces.
Parker Williams and Jordan Kepley had four digs each.
Anna Messisco had six kills, and Graham had four.
Messisco had two blocks.
Ashley Wood had nine assists, while Messisco had four.
Individual regionals are set for today and tomorrow for Rowan qualifiers from Salisbury, East Rowan and Carson.
East and Carson players will compete in the 3A Midwest Regional at Concord, while Salisbury qualifiers will be in the 2A Midwest Regional at Lexington.
North Rowan’s jayvees won 40-8 against West Davidson.
Defensive leaders for the Cavaliers were Javin Goodine, Vic Lyles, Zion Debose, Steven Thurston and Paris Hillie.
Hillie had an interception and blocked two punts.
Joseph Scott returned a punt for a TD.
The Offense was led by another strong outing by QB Corbin Smith,
Daeshun Hargrave scored two TDs, and Scott rushed for a touchdown. Naquis Caldwell and Sebastan Johnson also scored.
Salisbury 28, Lexington 0
The Hornets (2-5) rolled against Lexington.
Devonte Brown and Tywaun Rivers had fumble recoveries. Jalen McDowell intercepted a pass. Eric Gibson and A.J. Shields were defensive standouts.
Cameron Horne broke scoring runs of 88 and 36 yards. Marcus Corry had 4-yard and 10-yard scoring runs. Matt Woolly kicked four PATs.
Harison Smith and Tyquan Jones split QB duties.
Carson 24, Concord 14
Armoni Hogue put the Cougars on top with a 12-yard run, and Andy Lear’s 32-yard pass to Logan Parker made it 14-0.
Cole Howard’s 31-yard field goal and Bailey Rayfield’s 4-yard run gave the Cougars a 24-0 lead.
Austin Russ, Tanner Christy, Garret Pell and Jacob McCurry led the defense for the Cougars (6-1, 5-0).
• South Rowan lost to Central Cabarrus 40-6.
Jordan Bostian led West Rowan’s boys in the SPC Championships.
Bostian ran a time of 18:16 to place 11th.
All-SPC boys are Hickory Ridge’s Alex Cornwell Matt Inman and Vikash Kumar, NWC’s Gil Gilreath and Coleman Beaver, Carson’s Zachary Marchinko, East Rowan’s Conor Honeycutt, Josh Rowell, Chance Brown and Jason Troutman and West’s Bostian.
•All-SPC girls are NWC’s Emma Hand and Kara Dunkle, West’s Rebecca Parker, Central Cabarrus’ Alex Vandenberg, Concord’s Sydney Sholly and Eleanor Irving, Cox Mill’s Samantha Houghton and Alicia Galloway, East’s Faith Blume and Tori Gaul, Hickory Ridge’s Alexis Duft and West’s Josie Heglar.
Erwin’s tennis team beat China Grove on Wednesday for its 12th win.
Winners in singles were Mia Graham, Laura Weisensel and Kristen Brady.
Winning in doubles were Brady, O’Shannus Wood, Graham and Weisensel.
Southeast’s eighth-graders won 52-6 against Corriher-Lipe.
Cole Sifford threw four touchdown passes, with Garrett Beaver and Elijah Moss grabbing two each.
Jay Wilkerson rushed for two TDs, and Jalen Kemp had one.
Jaylin Williams picked off a pass.
Other defensive standouts included Arturo Vera, Zac Powers, Zain Tucker and Kenny Clark.
Southeast is home against China Grove next week.
Erwin won 2-1 against China Grove.
Camryn Corriher, Reagan Perry and Gracie Honeycutt led the Eagles at the plate.
Anna Shafer struck out four and didn’t walk anyone.
Madison Trexler, Chloe Breedlove, Laney Fulk and Perry made outstanding defensive plays for the Eagles (9-4).
Livingstone’s men’s basketball team opens the season on Nov. 13 at home against Morris.
Livingstone’s women open on Nov. 8 in the Lady Blue Bear Classic.
Catawba Valley Community College’s Leah Wells, who starred at North Iredell, was named the national Division II Player of the Week.
CVCC is ranked 11th nationally and is 30-0.
Carson’s Aimee Cloninger and South Rowan’s Tiffany Brooks are key players for CVCC.
In the Super Senior Four-Ball Tournament held at Greensboro Country Club, the local team of Russ Priddy-Grey Medinger shot 70-72 — 142 and tied for 24th.
• The Corbin Hills Fall 2-Man Tournament will be held on Oct. 26-27.
On Sunday, teams will compete in two-man Texas Scramble format. Teams will be flighted after Saturday’s first round.
On Oct. 26, the Hurley YMCA Warriors we are hosting a youth cross country meet at Salisbury Community Park.
On Nov. 9, the Warriors will host the AAU cross country national qualifier in Salisbury.
Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for its boys basketball league.
The league is for ages 7-15. The cost is $30 per player.

Registration for coed leagues (ages 5-6) and a girls league (ages 7-15) will run from Nov. 25-Jan. 11.
