SALISBURY — The city is still taking volunteers for BlockWork, an extreme neighborhood makeover project that will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, which is also national Make a Difference Day.
BlockWork will take place in the 700 and 800 blocks of East Franklin Street this year, in the Park Avenue neighborhood. Previous locations were city blocks on South Shaver Street and South Fulton Street.
Volunteers on East Franklin Street will plant trees and do other landscaping, repair facades, tackle general clean-up and repair porches and steps.
The program, hatched three years ago by city planner Lynn Raker and volunteer Barbara Perry, costs the city next to nothing, thanks to donated and steeply discounted materials, volunteer labor and a $10,000 prize in 2011. Salisbury won a USA Weekend Make a Difference Day Award for BlockWork, which serves as seed money for subsequent projects.
This year’s BlockWork event is led by Jonathan Cerny, chairman of the city’s Community Appearance Commission.
