North Rowan’s Robert Steele has been named coach of the year by the National High School Coaches Association for 2013.
North Rowan will honor Steele at halftime of tonight’s football game.
The individual tennis state championships will be held today and Saturday.
Salisbury qualified two doubles teams and two singles players for 2A competition in Cary.
The doubles teams are Madeline Hoskins-Alexandra Drye and Kayla Honeycutt-Anna Flynn. Kathryn Rusher and Grce Steinman will compete in singles.
Steinman will play Science & Math’s Jessie Huang in the first round.
Rusher will play Franklinton’s Madison Poupard in the first round.
Hoskins and Drye will play a Clinton duo in the first round.
Honeycutt and Flynn will play a team from Siler City Jordan-Matthews.
• In the 3A state tournament, East Rowan’s Lizzie Weaver was a singles qualifier and will compete in Burlington. Weaver plays Fayetteville Terry Sanford’s Emma Edge in the first round.

Carson survived a scoreless first half and stayed unbeaten in the SPC with a 20-8 win against Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday.
Armoni Hogue’s 12-yard scoring run gave the Cougars the lead, and Austin Russ had a 56-yard fumble return for a score.
Carson drove 85 yards to close the game and Bailey Rayfield got the touchdown on the final play.
Cole Howard kicked two PATs.
Brendan Westbrook intercepted a pass for the Cougars. Dalton Cauble rushed for 100 yards. Devon Youker directed the Cougars. Jacob McCurry and Alex Deal were defensive standouts for the Cougars (7-1, 6-0 SPC).
Salisbury 21, Thomasville 12
Sixty-yard scoring runs by QB Harrison Smith and Antwond Glenn led Salisbury to a 21-12 win against Thomasville.
Glenn added a second TD on an 11-yard run.
Matt Woolly kicked three PATs.
Jaylen McDowell picked off two passes to lead Salisbury’s defense. Tywun Rivens recovered a fumble for the Hornets (3-5, 2-1 CCC).
North Rowan 30, East Davidson 12
Naquis Caldwell caught two long TD passes and also had a pick-6 to lead the Cavaliers.
Jericho Alexander had an interception. Javin Goodine, Jaylen Brown, Zion DeBose and Terry Cathcart were defensive standouts.
Corbin Smith, Daeshun Hargrave and Joseph Scott led the offense.
West Rowan Middle shut out North Rowan Middle 22-0.
Brandon Wallace scored on a 16-yard run and Malcolm Ingram added a 2-point conversion. Bryant Young scored on a 2-yard run, while Malcolm Ingram scored from 3 yards out. Rick Phelps added the 2-point conversion.
Devin Turner had 94 yards rushing and Ingram added 91 yards rushing.
West had 242 yards on only four offensive drives.
The offensive line of Caleb Link, Owen White, Eli Walton, Ethan Adkins, Nick Newton, Phillip McDaniel and Zarrek Barger blocked well.
The West defense was led by Wallace, Turner, Anthony Renegar, Zach Owen, Josiah Dixon, Luke Hager, Dillon Simpson, and Mykal Berger.
West has six shutouts in seven games. West (7-0) will play Mooresville at home on Wednesday.
The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played in their first annual “Beat the Pro Day.”

Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is tied for the lead after 54 holes of the Web.com Qualifying Tournament’s first stage at Pinewild Country Club’s Magnolia Course in Pinehurst.
He has an 11-under-par 205 total after shooting 2-under 70 on Thursday.
Ethan Tracy of Charlotte shot a 66 and shares the lead with Adams entering the final round today.
Salisbury’s Will Collins shot a 71 on Thursday and is tied for 40th at 220. The top 32 plus ties will advance to the second stage, so Collins is very much in contention.
Top-seeded Mooresville won 6-5 against East Rowan in the championship game.
In the semifinals, Mooresville beat West Rowan 4-3, while Erwin beat China Grove 3-2.
In first-round games, Mooresville rolled 19-0 against Knox, China Grove beat Southeast 10-0, Erwin beat North Rowan Middle 15-0, and West Rowan beat Corriher-Lipe 14-2.
Guilford’s Taylor Whitley (Carson) had 29 assists, eight kills, nine digs and five aces to lead a sweep of Salem on Thursday.
• Catawba Valley Community College swept the Montreat jayvees Thursday.
Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 12 kills, while Tiffany Brooks (South Rowan) had six. Cloninger had four aces.
Livingstone’s cross country teams finished seventh at the CIAA Championships held in Cary.
Antonio Washington was 23rd to lead the men. Anna-Kay Edwards placed 11th in 20:21 to lead the women.
Salisbury beat 5-1 Lake Norman on Thursday to finish a 21-1 regular season.
Lucas Capito scored two goals. Christian Uribe, Emmy Turcios, and Bobby Cardelle had one each.
Zack Sukkasem had two assists, with Cardelle, John Canipe and Josh Lynch getting one helper each.
Salisbury got excellent play from sophomore Lynch, who played heavy minutes in the midfield. The backline of Canipe, Uribe, Reilly Gokey, and Philip Simons limited the opportunities for Lake Norman. Salisbury led 4-0 midway through the second half. Every player got minutes and reserves played significantly.
Salisbury will now wait to find out its seed in this year’s new process.

Knox was defeated by Erwin, 2-7, in their final match of the season.
Singles winners for Knox were Rachel Seifert and Bethanie Stauffer.
Knox finished the season with an overall record of 8-8 and a conference record of 7-7.
